This Capable Off-Road SUV Is Powered by BMW
The INEOS Grenadier is an off-road SUV with old-school looks and a modern, BMW powertrain. And it is set to go on sale in the U.S. by 2023. The Grenadier will feature four-wheel drive, body-on-frame construction, and an inline-six engine from BMW. Better yet, it boasts rugged exterior and interior looks. What engine does the INEOS Grenadier have?
In foreign markets, the Grenadier will offer both a gasoline and turbodiesel option. But in the U.S., the engine will be limited to an in-line six engine which makes 281 horsepower and 332 pound-foot of torque. The engine is manufactured by BMW, which adds some notability to this off-road SUV.
While it would be ideal to have a manual transmission available to this SUV, Car and Driver states that it would have been too expensive to develop. Because of this, the identity of the Grenadier’s engine is made clear through the gear shifter. Which is clearly something from BMW.
Will the Grenadier be good off-road?
In terms of off-road capability, the 2023 INEOS Grenadier will be extremely capable. It foregoes comforts offered by brands like Land Rover in lieu of a true 4×4 experience. The Grenadier will be body-on-frame, have live axles, and a standard two-speed transfer case. Additionally, there will be a standard locking center differential.
For those who want more capability from their 4WD SUV, front and rear locking differentials will be available. These differentials will make the Grenadier an even more capable off-road vehicle. As a reflection of its old-school characteristics, the INEOS Grenadier will not have things like adjustable drive modes or air suspension. But for those shopping for a true off-road SUV, that is something that is likely to be appreciated.
Will this off-road SUV come to America?
INEOS is expected to put the Grenadier on sale in the U.S. for 2023. With its closest competitor likely being the Jeep Wrangler, the Grenadier brings serious ruggedness to the table. But, it will have a higher price than its Jeep counterpart.
The expected price of the new INEOS Grenadier will be around $75,000. So, unfortunately, it will not have an old-school price to match its vintage-inspired design. But for those shopping for a new off-road SUV, there is really nothing like this model being sold on the market today.
Is the INEOS Grenadier worth buying?
There’s no avoiding the price of buying this 4×4, off-road SUV. Plus, without a dealer network, keeping the Grenadier functional may be a difficult task. Additionally, true off-road enthusiasts may be skeptical about buying an SUV with a European powertrain.
That said, the Grenadier will offer serious capability and features like traction control for added driving confidence. For some buyers, the premium of this 4×4 SUV may be worth it.
