Car and Driver Only Recommends 2023 Large SUVs From 2 Brands
Car and Driver’s Editors’ Choice Awards recognize the best new cars, trucks, SUVs, and minivans on the market. The latest 2023 release names the Chevy Tahoe, Chevy Suburban, and GMC Yukon as the cream of the crop in mass-market SUVs.
All three are produced by General Motors, which is unsurprising given General Motors’ reputation for quality. They share body styling, engine options, interior design, towing capacity, and several other features. Here is what Car and Driver liked so much about them.
2023 Chevrolet Tahoe
Car and Driver‘s 2023 Editor’s Choice Awards highlights several standout features of the Chevrolet Tahoe. This large SUV has a spacious interior with improved ergonomics and standard three-row seating. The second-row seats slide both front and back for added flexibility, so even adults can sit comfortably in the third row. The cargo area reaches an expansive 123 cubic feet if you fold the third- and second-row seats.
Car and Driver also noted the Chevy Tahoe’s impressive agility for its size. It is highly responsive and easy to maneuver, making driving a joy in various driving conditions. Its remarkably quiet cabin at highway speeds provides a relaxing and enjoyable driving experience.
Furthermore, Chevrolet offers the Tahoe in six trim levels that cater to various budgets and preferences.
2023 Chevrolet Suburban
Car and Driver loved the trio of powerful engines that power the six trim levels of the 2023 Chevrolet Suburban. All trim levels except the High Country come standard with a 5.3-liter V8 engine with 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. When paired with a rear-wheel-drive drivetrain and optioned with the Max Trailering package, the Suburban achieves an impressive towing capacity of 8300 pounds.
A 6.2-liter V8 with 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque is standard on the High Country, and an option in the Premier, Z71, and RST trim levels. The diesel 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine, optional for all trim levels except the Z71, produces 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque.
Car and Driver also highlighted the Chevy Suburban’s massive interior and cargo space. The large SUV offers seating for eight in three rows with enough room “for a town hall meeting,” as Car and Driver describes.
Like the Tahoe, the second-row seats can slide fore and aft. The Suburban is 15 inches longer than the Tahoe and has 16 more cubic feet of cargo space behind the third-row seats. When you fold the second- and third-row seats, the cargo space increases to 145 cubic feet.
2023 GMC Yukon
According to Car and Driver, the spacious interior of the 2023 GMC Yukon is its strongest selling point. Very few trucks offer as much space as the 2023 GMC Yukon, and it is even offered with a longer wheelbase (the Yukon XL) that increases passenger and cargo space. It is one of the roomiest and most accommodating passenger vehicles.
The Yukon has three rows and an eight-passenger seating capacity, which reduces to seven if you opt for the more comfortable second-row captain’s chairs. Like the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban, the Yukon features sliding second-row seats for flexibility. All three rows have enough headroom and leg space, so adults can get in and out quickly and sit comfortably. When you stow the second- and third-row seats, the cargo capacity increases to a generous 145 cubic feet.
The Yukon has a power-sliding center console standard on the Denali and Denali Ultimate and is available in SLT and AT4 models. You can move the center console front or back over a 10-inch track to add room to the first row.
Car and Driver also noted the Yukon’s impressive engine lineup. It features:
- A 5.3-liter V8 with 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque is standard on SLE, AT4, and SLT trim levels.
- A 6.2-liter V8 with 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque is standard on the Denali and optional on the AT4 trim levels.
- A turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel engine with 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque is optional on the Denali, SLT, and SLE.
Due to its increased size, power, and premium amenities, the 2023 GMC Yukon is more expensive than the Tahoe and the Suburban.
