Car and Driver’s Pick for Best Mid-Size EV Isn’t Surprising
With the end of the year coming up quickly, various automotive publications are naming their picks for best vehicles, including EV models. You might think that a Tesla would be at the top of the list, but for Car and Driver, a different brand made the cut. And that is Hyundai, with the 2022 Ioniq 5 SUV.
What is the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5?
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is an all-electric crossover. It shares its DNA with the Kia EV6, and overall, it appears to be a solid vehicle. Hyundai has plans to release a range of EV models, and the 5 marks the first.
Things to like about the 2022 Ioniq 5 include its fast charging times, driving range of 303 miles, and a solid design. The interior is usable, and the exterior does not look generic. Plus, you can get up to 320 horsepower.
The 2022 Ioniq 5 offers practicality
With a starting MSRP of $39,950, the new Ioniq 5 is fairly practical. You can get it equipped with all-wheel drive, and, according to Car and Driver, there is plenty of tech inside. Another important point is that the Ioniq 5 actually feels engaging to drive. In a world with most EVs feel the same, that is a big plus for this electric SUV.
The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 comes standard with a 58.0-kWh battery pack. But, if you are interested in more range, you can get a 77.4-kWh pack. Unfortunately, the 2022 Ioniq 5 does not offer a performance version like the Kia EV6 GT. Not everybody needs that level of power, though.
What does Car and Driver like about this electric SUV?
In terms of what Car and Driver likes about the Ioniq 5, the super quick charging and design are at the top of the list. EVs offer the ability for new design language, and Hyundai has taken full advantage of that.
Depending on what equipment you have, this EV can charge from 10% to 80% in about 18 minutes. In order to get that rate of charging, you will need access to a DC fast charger. So, that is something to keep in mind.
Can you buy a Hyundai Ioniq 5?
Currently, the Ioniq 5 is available in limited quantities. It is not yet available at every Hyundai dealership, so it might be difficult to find one. Understandably that might be a bit of a disappointment to some.
Hopefully, as things like supply chain issues get sorted out, more Ioniq 5 models will become available. If so, it would allow more folks to understand what this EV is about. Especially those who have been skeptical about going for something like a Tesla.
The 2022 Ioniq 5 might not be the cheapest electric SUV on the market. But for what it offers, the price does not feel unjustified. And there is something to be said about that.
