In a recent study, experts found that the vehicle owners said the angriest things about is the Kia Sedona. This minivan, renamed the Carnival in 2022, sure seems to get American drivers riled up. Why? Well one other piece of data is that in a reliability report, the first generation of the Sedona ranked 113th…out of the 113 models listed. One out of four were reported with manufacturer defects.

How in the world do you rank the cars that make owners the angriest? This study was done by the Lemon Law Experts, a group that helps vehicle owners claim money under the “lemon law” which protects consumers against manufacturer defects. Their analysts leveraged an algorithm engineered to rank people’s anger based on text they write. They fed the algorithm data from 25 years of vehicle owner reviews filed with Consumer Reports. Here are the ten cars that make owners leave the angriest reviews:

Make/ModelAnger Rating
Kia Sedona99.30
Mazda387.89
Nissan Armada87.70
Ford F-35086.97
Dodge Journey86.31
Dodge Charger84.49
Nissan Maxima84.21
Ford Focus83.94
Nissan Frontier83.15
Nissan Titan83.14

What’s intriguing about this ranking is that the Mazda3 and Nissan Armada make sense. Both models were subject to a scandalous airbag recall that was a real pain for owners. But the Kia Sedona is a bit of an outlier. Never a scandal on the news. But obviously many many peeved owners.

An interesting piece of this puzzle is the official German “Technical Inspection Association” reliability report. In the 2007 report, the first generation of the Kia minivan placed dead last among 2-3 year old cars, with a defect rate of 25.1%. For 2008, its defect rate improved to 19.7%, but it came in last place again. It also placed last in 4-5 year old cars with a defect rate of 27.6%.

Not everyone was down on the Kia Sedona’s reliability. JD Power gave the 2009 model the same predicted reliability score as the Honda Odyssey and Dodge Grand Caravan. MyRide.com looked at owner reviews and ranked the first-gen Sedona’s reliability above average.
