Modifying cars is such a broad spectrum of hobbies. Some people modify cars for racing, some try to go for a look that resembles the Fast and Furious generation of cars. No matter what you are into personally, there are a lot of trendy car mods that aren’t really that cool. While it’s your car at the end of the day, and you should be happy with whatever you’re doing to it. But, at the end of the day, these custom car mods might still be a little overrated.

Upgrading aero

Consider this both #1 and #2, because they both encompass adding aerodynamic components to your car. Sure, bolting up a front splitter and a tall spoiler can add a lot of aesthetic appeal to your car. Small aerodynamic features can make your car look cooler. Unfortunately, unless you are actually driving a performance car that is enhanced by these aerodynamic features there really is no point. But hey, if it makes you happy, why not.

Fake carbon fiber mods

Wrapping your car is a great way to modifying it cosmetically. Whether you want to add a cool pattern or just change up the paint, there are a lot of reasons why a vinyl wrap is a great option for your car. What’s totally overrated, however, is doing a carbon fiber wrap. While it looks neat from a distance, you can tell from close up that it isn’t real carbon fiber, and chances are, it’ll earn you more than a few eye rolls.

Carbon fiber is an important design element because it is incredibly lightweight compared to steel and fiberglass, but structurally rigid. Adding the appearance of carbon fiber by using a vinyl wrap doesn’t do anything to enhance your car, except appearance-wise. Even then, unless you spend a lot of money to get high quality, authentic-looking carbon fiber vinyl wrap, it doesn’t really look good either.

Cambering your wheels

Where this trend comes from is beyond me. If there is one thing I know for sure, it is that unfortunately, the trend of cambering your wheels doesn’t seem to be going away. Not only is it unattractive to almost everyone — if you like it, sure — but it’s also not practical. Cambering out your car means to adjust the tilt of your wheels, usually to the point where you are only rolling on a small portion of your wheels.

This is a great way to make sure your car doesn’t get traction, and that you wear through tires faster than necessary. If you like the style and don’t care about performance, then cambering your wheels is fine, but almost every other portion of the car community that cares even a little bit about performance will hate it.

At the end of the day, modifying your car should be about what you personally like. After all, you can’t please everyone, so you might as well live your dream, even if it involves overrated trends and losing traction.
