This Carbon E-Bike Is Lightweight, Fast, and Cheaper Than Competitors
A carbon e-bike can be an amazing way to get around town, whether you’re planning on a quick trip to the grocery store or a commute that racks up a handful of miles per day. With so many e-bike choices out there, it’s hard to pick just one. However, this one is so full of awesome tech at a fraction of the cost of competitors that it’s hard not to put it in the running. Best of all, because of its carbon-fiber structure, it’s insanely light.
New Urban Urtopia is a carbon fiber e-bike with built-in lights, security features, and a whole lot more
The New Urban Urtopia e-bike got its start as an IndieGoGo campaign that raised over $3.4 million dollars from over 1,300 backers. Quite frankly, it’s easy to see why.
This is undoubtedly the lightest e-bike I’ve ever experienced. The entire frame is made from carbon fiber. As is the fork, the handlebars (known as the smart bar by Urtopia, more on that in a bit), and even the drive belt (no chain here!) are made with lightweight carbon composite. As a result, this thing only weighs about 30 pounds, completely locked and loaded with the battery.
One of the greatest features of this bike is, well, all of its features. It has a built-in headlight, red taillight (or position light, as it were), and projection lights that illuminate the ground as your ride. Best of all, those projection lights double as turn signals. So, when you’re riding at night, cars and other people around you know your intentions even if they can’t see hand signals.
The bike has a 36-volt electric motor on the rear wheel, making about 25 pound-feet of torque. That’s more than enough to get this thing moving. It has a 360 Wh Samsung lithium-ion battery back that charges in just 2.5 hours. Once full, the motor and battery combo can deliver up to 80 miles of range on a charge.
Additionally, the Urtopia bike has a top speed of 20 miles per hour on U.S. versions like this one.
App integration and the smart bar
Urtopia has an associated app that does a whole host of things. You can unlock your Urtopia e-bike and track its location from the app. Additionally, it has an accelerometer that will ping your app if the bike is getting moved. That way, you know if someone is trying to steal it. If it does get stolen, GPS tracking makes a quick and easy task of finding it. Since a key is required to remove the battery, there’s no easy way thieves can power the GPS tracking down, either.
This e-bike’s flagship feature is what the company calls its smart bar. In the middle of the handlebar is a screen that displays key information like your speed, what mode you’re in, and the battery’s charge level. The right side of the smart bar has a thumbprint scanner as an additional security feature. When operating, the thumbprint scanner acts as a “horn.”
The smart bar can also be controlled with voice commands. Holding down the horn button/thumbprint scanner brings up the voice command prompt that allows you to say something like “sport mode.” In response, the bike will go to sport mode.
The left side of the bar has a directional pad that controls which riding mode you are in, as well. Additionally, pressing left or right on the d-pad will activate the bike’s turn signals. Once your ride is done, long-pressing on the down button will lock the bike and power it down.
This bike is fast, comfortable, and a remarkably good deal for what it is
There’s very little to complain about when it comes to the New Urban Urtopia e-bike. Realistically, the only complaint about the bike is a complaint that’s pretty consistent across all bikes. The seat just isn’t all that comfortable. Aside from that, though, the ride quality is unmatched. Though it has puncture-resistant road-bike-style tires, it’s still remarkably smooth and graceful.
Control over the bike is simple, too. The disk brakes are amazingly responsive, and the lightning is remarkably bright for night riding.
A higher top speed would be great to get a little nitpicky. In using the bike to get around for some errands within a few miles, I found that the 20 mph top speed is lovely. However, it’s not very easy to sustain. The bike likes to cruise at around 15 mph with leisurely pedaling. So, to achieve the 20 mph top speed, you have to pedal pretty hard. If you want to sustain that speed, you have to continue pedaling hard.
The five modes of the Urtopia, Pedal, Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Turbo, decide how much motor assist you get when pedaling. I consistently found myself putting it in Turbo mode every time I was on it.
Overall, this e-bike is a fantastic deal compared to its competition. However, it is still $2,600, assuming you pay the $49 reservation fee right now. If you don’t reserve one and decide to buy it later, the price is $2,799.
Ultimately, if you’re in the market for an e-bike, this is undoubtedly the option you should choose. However, you’d better act fast. There are only 2,000 available.
