33 years ago, Greg Smith left his teaching job and started trucking for Schneider National, Inc. Today, the truck driver crossed an incredible milestone at Schneider’s headquarters in Green Bay, Wisconsin: 5,000,000 logged miles. What’s more, he drove them all without a single preventable accident.

According to Schneider, as of today, Swift’s been “to the moon and back” 10 times during his career with the company. While thousands of Schneider truck drivers clock one million miles, only two others have achieved 5,000,000 miles in the company’s 90-year history.

Just for kicks, I did some math: 5,000,000 miles at an average speed limit of, say, 70 mph equals 71,428 hours of driving. That’s 2,976 days or a little over eight years of continuously operating a semi-truck.

“Reaching five million miles seemed unimaginable,” Swift said in Schneider’s press release. “It’s an immense honor to be recognized and to be part of a company that equips us to succeed. Safety is the key to long-term success.” Swift started with paper maps, then advanced GPS, and now collision mitigation systems.

The truck driver says that proper planning and time management led to his career achievements. He also highlighted his ability to take in stunning landscapes while working. He even met his wife, Erica, through the company.

“I think the five million miles has done more than just boost my career,” Swift explained. “It’s taken my home life, financial life, and overall wellbeing to new levels. With a great career and the miles I’ve driven, great things have come along with it.”

Today, Schneider awarded Swift with a parade, its “Sound the Horn” celebration (wherein staff blow a semi-truck horn inside headquarters to highlight achievements), and a $10,000 bonus, in addition to his other standard performance-based rewards.
