Indian started 2021 strong not just by launching the redesigned 2022 Chief, but also by putting a few in several celebrated builders’ hands. And as this year draws to a close, the last of these custom Indian motorcycles is finally here. Paul Cox and Keino Sasaki revealed their vintage-bobber-inspired Chief in August, while Go Takamine’s hardtail build dropped a few weeks ago. Now, it’s Carey Hart’s turn to show off what he’s done with his custom 2022 Indian Chief.

It’s been months in the making, but Carey Hart’s custom 2022 Indian Chief is finally here

In-between motocross racing and running several businesses, Carey Hart customizes motorcycles. And though his building career started with a Harley-Davidson Road Glide, Hart’s become a regular on the custom Indian scene. The 2022 Indian Chief build he just revealed isn’t even his first custom Chief.

This new bike, dubbed ‘Black Beauty,’ is a bit subtler, though—somewhat. Although Hart collaborated with Airtrix for both of his custom Indian Chiefs, this bike doesn’t have a flashy paint job. Instead, it wears “understated” satin-gloss black paint with red pinstriping, Cruiser notes. You can thank Hart’s client for that.

Carey Hart has another reason to be thankful for his client: he’s the same size. That made it easier for Hart to tweak and modify the 2022 Indian Chief according to his style. And that style is all about performance.

Carey Hart gave his custom Indian Chief build more performance boosts than just horsepower

Firstly, Carey Hart changed up the 2022 Indian Chief’s geometry and ergonomics.

He tweaked the former by installing one-inch-taller Fox piggyback shocks in the back and raising the front end by half an inch. To modify the latter, Hart installed a San Diego Customs shifter, brake pedal, and footpegs, as well as an Odi Bars motocross-style flat handlebar with matching grips. That handlebar also sits on Kraus mounts and risers that are three inches taller than stock. Finally, the custom Indian Chief has a Saddlemen/Hart Luck dragster-style seat for a more upright riding position, Cruiser notes.

Speaking of drag racing, Carey Hart felt the 2022 Indian Chief Dark Horse’s 1890cc Thunder Stroke 116 engine was already powerful enough. So, the only powertrain mods are a Fab 28 two-into-one stainless-steel exhaust and a matching DynaJet tune. You know, for a bit more V-twin music.

However, Carey Hart doesn’t just love going fast. He also loves “’turning fast and braking hard,’” and won’t “’sacrifice anything on my bikes that…[jeopardizes] their handling, how it performs, or my safety,’” RideApart reports. So, while he didn’t significantly modify the 2022 Indian Chief’s powertrain, his motocross influence shines through elsewhere.

In addition to the new Fox shocks, Hart gave Black Beauty a GP Suspension re-valve. He also installed a Beringer clutch perch, front brake master cylinder, and brake calipers. And those calipers squeeze Galfer wave disc rotors. Also, this custom Indian Chief rocks a Barnett clutch cable as well as Rizoma brake lights, indicators, and mirrors. And it rides on San Diego Customs cast wheels wrapped in Dunlop tires.

Finally, Carey Hart gave his Indian Chief build a new lower frame cover, a Drag Specialties license plate bracket, and a Rokform phone mount. And he used titanium bolts throughout the bike.

Hart built Black Beauty for Jon Bernthal, but can you get your own?

As with Go Takamine’s custom Indian Chief, Carey Hart didn’t build this bike for himself or Indian. This custom bike belongs to Jon Bernthal, star of The Walking Dead and The Punisher. And he “’can’t imagine a more perfect bike,’” RideApart says.

However, while Black Beauty belongs to someone else, that doesn’t mean you can’t recreate it. Although some of its parts are one-offs, many are off-the-shelf components. You can easily buy and install things like the Fox shocks, Saddlemen seat, Rizoma lights and mirrors, and Kraus handlebar risers. Though if you’re going to swap out the exhaust, make sure it’s street-legal. Ditto with the engine tune.

Still, while you can’t ride Carey Hart’s custom Indian Chief, that doesn’t mean you can’t make your version of Bernthal’s racer.
