Though it’s not around anymore, the 6 Series models were some of BMW’s best modern grand tourers. But for some, BMW’s cars aren’t luxurious enough—which is where Alpina’s high-dollar builds come in. And one of those Alpina-touched-up cars is this week’s Cars and Bids bargain: a 2015 BMW Alpina B6 xDrive Gran Coupe.

The F06-gen BMW Alpina B6 is a better Gran Coupe than the M6, MotorTrend says

Unlike the 7 Series, BMW did offer a full-on 6 Series M car, the 2012-2018 M6. Which, by 2014, was available as an actual coupe and a four-door ‘Gran Coupe,’ aka a sedan, Car and Driver reports. However, while the M6 is certainly sporty, if what you want are every-day comfort and opulent luxury, the Alpina B6 xDrive Gran Coupe is the better choice, MotorTrend reports.

Like the contemporary BMW M6, the 2015 Alpina B6 xDrive Gran Coupe has a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8. However, unlike the M6, it has AWD, and a ‘conventional’ eight-speed automatic rather than a dual-clutch one, Car and Driver reports. The B6 is also less powerful than the M6: it has 540 hp, while the M6 has 560 hp.

However, the Alpina B6 has 540 lb-ft, while the M6 only has 500 lb-ft. So, while the M6 is lighter and more powerful, the B6’s 3.7-second 0-60 mph time is only 0.2 seconds behind, Car and Driver reports. Plus, while the BMW M6 has a speed limiter, the B6 doesn’t, so it tops out at 198 mph. And even at 130 mph, the sedan pulls hard when you put your foot down, Car and Driver reports.

That’s really what the Alpina B6 xDrive Gran Coupe is about: being a “pure, unabashed luxo-sport cruiser,” Road & Track reports. It rides on retuned adaptive dampers, has upgraded cooling for the engine and brakes, and multiple functional aero elements for high-speed stability, MT reports. The leather seats are plush and all-day comfortable, and in Comfort Mode, the suspension “smothers road imperfections,” Automobile reports. Plus, the interior material quality makes for a “sumptuous” cabin, Autoblog reports.

The 2015 BMW Alpina B6 xDrive Gran Coupe on Cars and Bids

The 2015 BMW Alpina B6 xDrive Gran Coupe currently listed on Cars and Bids is a fairly rare car. Though, to be fair, all Alpina BMWs are, due to the nature of production. Still, Cars and Bids reports that Alpina only sold 310 F06 B6s in North America—and this is one of them.

And this particular Alpina B6 Gran Coupe is basically fully-loaded. In addition to the Alpina-specific suspension, active anti-roll bars, wheels, and aero components, it has Merino leather upholstery, heated front seats, sycamore-wood trim, and an Alcantara headliner. Plus, it has the optional Driver Assistance Plus and Executive Packages.

The former adds side- and top-view cameras, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control. And the latter package adds ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heads-up display, adaptive LED headlights, power side and rear sunshades, a heated steering wheel, and ceramic controls. Plus, this B6 has navigation, parking sensors, and the optional Bang & Olufsen audio system.

Cars and Bids notes that this BMW Alpina B6 xDrive Gran Coupe has a few exterior dings. But it’s fully stock and only has 55,600 miles on the clock. And it has a zero-accident history and extensive service records. The most recent services include oil changes, an adaptive suspension alignment, replacing a front control-arm bushing, fresh fluids, and new front brake pads.

It’s an extremely rare, high-luxury bargain sedan

As of this writing, this 2015 BMW Alpina B6 xDrive Gran Coupe is listed on Cars and Bids at $33,333 with three days left in the auction. Not only is that roughly the price of a new 3 Series, but it’s also significantly cheaper than its original MSRP.

When it was new, the Alpina B6 Gran Coupe started at just over $126k, Car and Driver reports. Cars and Bids reports that this particular car, with all its options, stickered at $137,480. Plus, while there are a handful of F06-gen B6s listed on Autotrader, the cheapest one with similar mileage costs over $10,000 more.

To be fair, like the contemporary B7, the Alpina B6 does have the ‘dreaded’ N63 V8. However, in 2012 BMW revised the engine and resolved most of its reliability issues, BMW Tuning reports. And this 2015 B6 has seemingly had the not-a-recall “Customer Care Package” service performed, based on the seller’s notes. This service rectified “most” of the N63’s issues, including the timing chain, various seals and gaskets, and fuel injectors, BMW Tuning reports.

In short, then, this car is a rare, reasonably-affordable luxury highway cruiser.
