Chappell Roan doesn’t want to hear about your truck
Chappell Roan is the stage name of singer/songwriter Kayleigh Rose Amstutz. She signed with Atlantic Records at just 17, but was later dropped. Eight years later, her 2024 debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, built a cult following before climbing to the very top of the charts. In one year she went from being Olivia Rodrigo’s opening act to breaking the record for most crowded performance at Lollapalooza. Ever.
Chappell often seems as surprised as anyone by her meteoric rise to fame. She’s been doing the podcast, radio show, and talk show circuit. But she often gives unfiltered answers to interview questions. A DJ from Chicago’s 101.9 radio station asked “Is there any dealbreaker you have while dating?” during a segment called “dealbreaker drama.”
Chappell didn’t miss a beat, immediately responding, “Yeah, I don’t want to hear about your car.”
Both DJs laughed and the interviewer asked a follow up, “Do you have multiple people talking about their cars–bragging about their cars? Like working on it?”
Chappell specified, “I’m from Missouri. Like…people are obsessed with their trucks. And I’m like ‘shut up.'”
Chappell’s harsh answer may be due to residual frustration, from back when Missouri’s thriving truck culture seeped into her dating life. Today, she has no such problem. In fact, she’d probably be more forgiving on a date.
“I mean I date women so that’s not really…If a girl was like ‘ooh my muscle car’ I would be like (mimes gasp) ‘take me for a ride!’…for girls I’m like ‘la la la,’ I don’t date men anymore.”
As a man who loves my lifted truck, I’d say that’s still some good advice by way of Chappell Roan: If you are chatting with anyone, double-check they share your passion before waxing poetic about it for too long. She also chimed in with another red flag that turns her off on a date.
“Name dropping freaks me out. I’m like, ‘And what…’ that is crazy to me.”
