Is the Cheapest 2022 Ford F-250 Super Duty Worth Buying?
If you’re considering buying a brand new heavy-duty pickup truck, the 2022 Ford F-250 Super Duty is an option. As one of the most popular vehicles in its class, it’s earned its reputation. For the 2022 model year, the F-250 is touted as a powerful, capable, efficient truck with a spacious and surprisingly tech-filled cabin. However, of the many trim levels in the lineup, only one is much cheaper than the rest. If you’re not interested in all the bells and whistles, is the cheapest 2022 Ford F-250 Super Duty worth buying?
What is the cheapest 2022 Ford F-250 Super Duty?
According to Edmunds, the XL trim level is the cheapest 2022 Ford F-250 Super Duty. Starting at $44,830, it’s much more affordable than other trims in the lineup. For example, one step up from the base model is the XLT trim, which starts at $50,675. As a result, the base model XL is a very basic pickup overall. It does provide all of the most important features for anyone looking for a towing and hauling-capable model. In addition, it comes with a powerful 6.2-liter V8 engine producing 385 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque.
Moreover, even the cheapest version of the F-250 Super Duty is available with two more engines. Buyers can pay extra for the 7.3-liter V8 that makes 430 hp and 475 lb-ft. Or the final option is a 6.7-liter turbocharged diesel V8 that produces a whopping 475 hp and 1,050 lb-ft. Ford lists the mighty diesel engine at $10,495 and the optional V8 at $2,045.
F-250 Super Duty XL work truck standard features
As previously mentioned, the XL trim level is intended for work truck purposes. As a result, the cheapest F-250 Super Duty is lacking in a few ways that keep it from feeling like a modern vehicle. However, it’s more well-equipped than you’d probably expect. For example, the pickup has Bluetooth, a 4.2-inch Sync infotainment display, a USB port, onboard Wi-Fi, automatic on/off headlights, a backup camera, and more.
Unfortunately, some of the most basic features feel slightly archaic in 2022. Things like manual door locks, windows, seats, air conditioning, mirrors, and even halogen headlights instead of LEDs cheapen the F-250. However, it’s meant for towing and hauling, and it comes ready. A trailer hitch receiver, trailer sway control, hill start assist, and more are included. Even with the most basic engine, the truck can tow 16,700 pounds, which rises to over 21,000 with the optional engines.
Is the cheapest F-250 Super Duty worth buying?
We think the 2022 Ford F-250 Super Duty XL base model is worth buying. However, it depends on what you’re using the pickup for. Anyone looking for a daily-use work truck to tow and haul on a budget will do well with the XL trim level. However, an upgrade might be better if you’re not constantly using the truck for work purposes and need some interior comfort and amenities.
For example, the XLT trim that’s just over $50K adds power to all those manual features. Moreover, things like Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, navigation, household-style outlets, a power tailgate lock, heated exterior mirrors, and much more are available starting with the XLT trim. While the cheapest version of the Ford truck is OK for people using it for work, that’s about it. Luckily, those needing a heavy-duty truck with modern amenities can opt for the XLT trim level.
