Really, no matter how you dice it, Honda has made the Civic all you need on the cheap. We don’t mean “cheap” cheap, either. After all, it won North American Car of the Year. No, we just mean the price. But, is buying the bottom-dollar 2022 Honda Civic still worth it? Or should you spend a little more money?

The 2022 Honda Civic LX is $23,365

The cheapest 2022 Honda Civic you can buy is the Civic LX, which per Car and Driver, starts at $23,365. Thankfully, if you want one, you’re still getting a good number of standard features. For 2022, Honda’s most popular sedan got a host of big changes. Obviously, the looks have changed quite a lot. Things have been toned down some across the model range, including the upcoming 2023 Honda Civic Type R.

Anyway, features. First, you’re getting a CVT automatic transmission and FWD. Really, the mechanicals of the base Civic LX doesn’t matter much (a 158 hp four-pot for those that care). On the inside, you get standard Apple Carplay and Android Auto, cloth seats, and the brand’s newest infotainment. Aesthetically, the cabin has been totally updated as well. You also get automatic climate control and a semi-digital dash display.

$3,000 gets you the Civic you should buy instead

Really, that’s not much. You can get any of the above features as standard in pretty much every new car today, including the 2022 Honda Civic EX. In our minds, that’s the one to have. The 2022 Honda Civic adds a lot more functionality to the new Civic, and that’s doubly true if you swing for the Civic hatchback. These start at $26,365 and $28,065 respectively.

First, some mechanicals you’ll actually care about. The Civic EX lands you the beefier 180 hp 1.5L engine, as well as a sunroof, heated mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control, and some leather upholstery. If you’re hauling people a lot, you’ll also appreciate the added USB port. Finally, this trim also lands you blind-spot monitoring and heated seats. Frankly, both are a must in our book.

Is the Civic EX trim worth it?

While the base 2022 Honda Civic is nothing to scoff at and a solid bargain, the Civic EX makes things a little more livable. On top of that, the hatchback’s added practicality can’t be missed. We also like the way the hatch looks better. While the base Civic might be worth your money if only just, the Honda Civic EX helps make the newest model worthy of that Car of the Year award.
