Most Buyers Couldn’t Even Drive the Cheapest New Car of 2024
Nissan is advertising a brand new Versa subcompact sedan with a 2024 MSRP of $16,680. No, that’s not a typo. For less than the average used crossover, you can get a brand new car. But without Apple Carplay/Android Auto–or an automatic transmission–most buyers will want to skip the entry-level Versa trim.
Most folks who want wheels under $20k opt for a used vehicle these days. And with the average car lasting longer than ever, that makes sense. But if you really need a brand new vehicle under $17k, Nissan’s got you. Most automakers have cancelled their subcompact sedans in North America, but not Nissan. The Nissan Versa (called the Almera in other markets) is still going strong, with a facelift for the 2023 model year.
The Versa’s looks are the most cutting-edge thing about it. If you opt for the entry-level Versa S you’ll be rowing your own gears with a 5-speed manual transmission. You also won’t get Apple Carplay/Android Auto unless you buy the S+ package. But even on the base trim, you will get an infotainment screen for the backup camera.
Nissan also makes sure every Versa has automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, rear automatic braking, and lane departure warnings. The FWD Versa has a 1.6-liter I4 engine that makes 122 horsepower. With the stick shift, you should get 32 city and 40 highway MPG. Not too shabby.
A couple of caveats on the Versa’s price. The Versa’s MSRP is only $20 lower than the Mitsubishi Mirage. But many reviewers agree the Versa represents a better value than the Mirage which is underpowered and has a lower-quality interior. Also, Nissan will charge you $1,140 for shipping and handling, plus whatever fees your dealership wants to tack on. So your total cost will be at least $17,820. If you want an automatic/CVT transmission you’re MSRP will be at least $18,350 and your total will be at least $19,490.
