Cheapest New Ford Mustang Loses This Awesome Feature
The upcoming seventh-generation Ford Mustang promises to carry the model forward without the addition of a hybrid powertrain. That’s good news for enthusiasts who aren’t ready for the sound of a naturally aspirated V8 to fall silent. However, the cheapest new Ford Mustang, the S650-generation EcoBoost, loses an option that is near and dear to sports car fans everywhere: the manual transmission.
What transmission does the 2024 Ford Mustang EcoBoost have?
Unfortunately, the new 2024 Ford Mustang EcoBoost will lose the Getrag MT82 six-speed manual transmission. Instead, the cheapest Mustang will pack a 10-speed automatic transmission as the only option.
That’s not necessarily a bad thing; the 2018 Ford Mustang GT Automatic hit 60 mph in less than 4.0 seconds in Car and Driver’s testing. Moreover, while the new Ford Mustang EcoBoost doesn’t have the same power figures as an S550-generation GT, it still gets a power bump compared to the previous EcoBoost.
Specifically, the 2024 Mustang EcoBoost produces 315 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque. That represents a five-horsepower increase over the previous generation. The GT gets an even more dramatic increase; the GT corrals extra power to the tune of 480 horsepower. Moreover, much like the Chevrolet Corvette, a performance exhaust system boosts that figure. In the case of the GT, it’s a six-horsepower increase to 486 horsepower.
What transmission will the new 2024 Ford Mustang GT have?
Unlike the new Ford Mustang EcoBoost, the 2024 GT will have a Getrag MT82 six-speed manual transmission in addition to the 10-speed automatic transmission. Moreover, the 2024 Mustang GT is the most powerful Coyote GT ever.
That’s good news for fans who want a three-pedal V8 muscle car at a time when the competition is disappearing. For instance, the 2023 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat packs a six-speed manual transmission, but it’s heading to the chopping block just as the seventh-generation Mustang gets started. Moreover, for fans who want the fastest possible GT, the 10-speed automatic promises to return the best acceleration times.
Is the MT82 a good transmission?
While the Getrag MT82 does provide a manual transmission option for the latest Ford Mustangs, it has some issues. The MT82 is prone to premature wear, third-gear lockouts, and even failures compared to the Tremec TR-3160 in the Dark Horse and Mach 1.
Will the next generation of Mustangs have carryover engines?
Every new Ford Mustang model in the S650 lineup will carry over the EcoBoost and Coyote engines. The 2024 EcoBoost will continue to use the turbocharged 2.3L four-cylinder engine, and the GT will use the 5.0L Coyote V8.
Moreover, even though the seventh-generation pony car doesn’t have a Shelby flavor yet, the special edition Dark Horse produces 500 horsepower from the most powerful Coyote V8 ever. Hopefully, we’ll see a Shelby badge in the seventh-generation lineup soon.
