Cheapest New Honda Hybrid Car Will Soon Be Killed
Honda aims to place more emphasis on its hybrid models, as shown by the redesigned CR-V and Accord. For the 2023 model year, the premium, higher trims for both models are hybrids — and more expensive than the fully gas-powered versions. However, for those looking for a more affordable choice, there’s another model: the 2022 Honda Insight compact sedan, the cheapest new Honda hybrid car. However, the Insight won’t be around for much longer, for it will soon be killed.
2022 Honda Insight is the cheapest new Honda hybrid car
With a starting price of $25,760 MSRP, the 2022 Honda Insight is the cheapest new Honda car. The next most affordable one is the 2023 Accord Hybrid ($31,345 MSRP).
Here are the cheapest new Honda hybrid cars — in order of cheapest to most expensive:
- 2022 Honda Insight: $25,760 MSRP
- 2023 Honda Accord Hybrid: $31,345 MSRP
- 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid: $32,950 MSRP
Honda also plans to produce a new hybrid version of the Civic compact sedan for the American market. However, the Civic Hybrid won’t be available until the 2024 model year. For now, the most affordable new Honda hybrid car is the Insight, which the Civic Hybrid will replace.
The Insight will soon be discontinued
The Honda Insight was one of the first hybrid vehicles — with it debuting in 1999. It never achieved the success of the Toyota Prius, though, and it didn’t make the same cultural impact. However, it sold well enough to result in three generations and over a two-decade run.
That run will soon end, though. Honda will kill the Insight, and there’s not a new vehicle for the 2023 model year. The 2022 model year is the last year of production. Also, the Insight is no longer available to order on the Honda website, so those that want one have to go the dealership route.
The discontinuation is due to low sales in recent years. As detailed by GoodCarBadCar, only 18,685 units of the compact car were sold in the United States in 2021 — and 7,628 in 2022. Also, as mentioned earlier, the Civic Hybrid will replace the Insight. The Civic is one of the best-selling compact cars in America, which bodes well for the success of the upcoming hybrid model.
What’s the gas mileage of the 2022 Honda Insight?
As expected, the 2022 Honda Insight delivers high fuel economy. Its hybrid powertrain combines a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor — for an estimated gas mileage of up to 55 city/49 highway mpg.
In comparison, the 2023 Accord Hybrid has an estimated fuel economy of up to 51 city/44 highway mpg, while the 2023 CR-V Hybrid gets up to 43 city/36 highway mpg. We’ll have to wait and see what the efficiency numbers are for the 2024 Civic Hybrid, though.
Historically, hybrids have been knocked for their weak performance. However, the Insight has respectable acceleration, with a 0-60 mph time of 7.7 seconds. While that won’t blow anyone away in a drag race, the affordable vehicle is quicker than most other hybrids, as well as many fully gas-powered cars.
The 2022 Honda Insight is the cheapest new Honda hybrid car available, but efficiency-minded consumers won’t be able to get it for much longer. With slow sales and the Civic Hybrid in the works, the Insight will soon be killed.
