It’s common for automakers to offer entry-level models in their lineups. These budget-friendly trims wouldn’t exist if there weren’t consumer demand for them. Chrysler is no exception. It offers two differently equipped minivans, but they don’t have the same model name. The Chrysler Voyager, compared to its Chrysler Pacifica sibling, is one such entry-level, bare-bones alternative to the fancier trims.

But though the Chrysler Pacifica grows in popularity thanks to its style, design, and convenience features, the simple Voyager still offers one key advantage. And it could be the detail that matters most to you.

Let’s be honest about the Chrysler Voyager

The Chrysler Voyager provides some nice features, but it offers a no-frills approach to its more expensive Pacifica counterpart. The Voyager almost looks identical to the Pacifica, too, and you might mistake one for the other if you saw them driving by in a hurry.

Despite the few pros, including clever storage cubbies, Car and Driver calls the Voyager “a cheapo version of the Chrysler Pacifica.” You can expect a V6 engine, room for seven across three rows, and a good amount of cargo space in the Voyager. But that’s about it.

The 2021 Chrysler Voyager vs. the Pacifica

The 2021 Chrysler Voyager won’t pamper you or offer the updated driver aids or conveniences. The 2021 Pacifica outperforms in almost every category. Its Stow ‘n Go seating is still the rage. But this year’s model also introduces more storage. There’s also a plug-in hybrid Pacifica this year, as well. 

Other differentiators involve the standard equipment. The 2021 Chrysler Pacifica brings extras like a power liftgate, remote start, and rain-sensing wipers, all features you can’t get with the Voyager. U.S. News also lists heated front seats, a panoramic glass roof, and performance tire options not available with the Voyager. In a way, the comfort, versatility, space, and tech make the Pacifica the perfect minivan. 

It may come down to pricing

The 2021 Chrysler Pacifica is a family-pleaser. But the Voyager still has one edge over its sibling. And that’s its value. You could buy a bare-bones Voyager and pay a whole lot less than you would for a Pacifica. Chrysler lists the starting price for the plush Pacifica at $35,195. The base Voyager starts at $26,985, Chrysler shows. That’s a $10,000-plus advantage that could weigh heavily on your purchasing decision.

So, which Chrysler minivan is the better buy?

The 2021 Chrysler Voyager and Pacific offer the same V6 engine, the same number of airbags, and identical fuel economy (except for the hybrid Pacifica). If you want the comfort extras, the tech, and the convenience, the Chrysler Pacifica is a great buy. But if you’re on a budget, you can’t ignore the nearly $11,000 savings available with the Voyager. It’s arguably the only advantage over the Pacifica, but it’s a big benefit to consider, and it could be the deciding factor for you.

Sure, the Chrysler Voyager may be the “cheapo” Pacifica. But it also doesn’t pretend to be anything other than a budget-friendly family hauler. If you need three rows and the basics, it’s a wallet-friendly minivan.
