As the world moves away from gasoline-powered vehicles and into the arms of EVs, there are a lot of products in the works. The company announced the Goodyear ElectricDrive GT, a new tire made specifically for electric vehicles. What makes this tire different from other options already on the market?

Goodyear has been working on different kinds of tires quietly for years now. This includes airless tires, recycled tires, and other specialty tires that might not be right for all vehicles. But with the electric vehicle craze, Goodyear has been working on the ElectricDrive GT tire as a replacement option for EVs.

Goodyear says this is the first replacement tire specifically tuned for electric vehicles.

“The Goodyear ElectricDrive GT is an ultra-high performance, all-season tire that delivers long-lasting tread wear and a quiet ride for EV drivers and passengers.”

The new ElectricDrive GT tire uses Goodyear’s SoundComfort Technology. The Goodyear SoundComfort Technology is a built-in sound barrier to reduce road noise coming from it. Additionally, it has an asymmetric tread pattern and tread compound to make the tire ready for all seasons. This allows the tire to handle in both wet and dry conditions with ease.

Goodyear said that the company is proud to be working on a project specifically for electric vehicles.

“Products that anticipate the mobility needs of consumers are central to Goodyear’s focus on innovation excellence. Electric vehicles present a very specific set of requirements for load, torque, noise, range, rolling resistance and overall performance. We’re proud to deliver leading technologies to serve the evolving EV landscape.”

There are a lot of differences between gasoline-powered cars and electric vehicles, including the performance aspect. Until now, EVs have made do with tires meant for mass-market vehicles. Andrew Lau, product marketing manager, said, “We know drivers are looking for a replacement tire that delivers enhanced treadwear without sacrificing performance.”

The Goodyear ElectricDrive GT electric vehicle tire will be released sometime next year and will expand from there. The first set of ElectricDrive GT tires will come in size 255/45R19 104W XL. This tire size will fit most of the popular high-performance electric vehicles on the market.

The company has also been working on airless tires

The Goodyear airless tire was seen testing on a Tesla Model 3 at the track earlier this year. Companies have been working on airless tires for years but have never actually hit the market. Goodyear and Michelin have been working on an airless tire prototype, which actually made it to the road.

Goodyear calls this the non-pneumatic, airless tires (NPT), while Michelin calls it the UPTIS. The Michelin Uptis (Unique Puncture-Proof Tire System) aims to be on the road sometime around 2025, while Goodyear set its sights a bit further out to 2030. Keep an eye out for the ElectricDrive GT sometime next year, likely on a Tesla Model S Plaid or something just as powerful.
