The Equinox name is coming to a fully electric crossover, according to GM Authority. General Motors has a grand total of 30 EVs set to launch by 2025 across all its brands. Equinox is one of them and it will be based on GM’s Ultium technology. Though GM’s president didn’t share all the juicy details, we have some including a rough idea of the price tag. On the cheaper side for an electric vehicle, the Chevrolet Equinox EV will start around $30,000.

The Equinox EV crossover will begin the next generation of the renowned model. With it comes a new platform, design, and technology. A lack of exhaust system points to electric-powered, and the front end will transform to more closely resemble that of the Chevy Bolt. GM Authority found a design patent revealing these changes back in August. The Equinox will use GM’s Ultium technology, but what, exactly, is that?

“The GM Ultium Drive family covers front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive propulsion combinations, including high-performance and off-road capabilities. More specially, all five drive units are to be powered by one or more of three motors including a primary front-wheel-drive motor, which can be configured for front- or rear-wheel drive, and an all-wheel drive-assist motor. GM will lead the design and development of Ultium Drive’s modular architecture, and all GM electric vehicles built on the Ultium platform will be powered by Ultium Drive and Ultium Battery technology.”

Electric battery performance

The first thing most people want to know when looking into a new EV is more details about the battery. Speed, range, charging time, and overall power are very important to owners. GM’s Utium batteries are being produced to be used throughout its entire electric lineup. The Equinox EV will use these batteries when it releases. GM says in “select vehicles”, these batteries can get a GM-estimated range of up to 450 miles on a full charge. It can also move a vehicle from 0-60 mph in just 3 seconds.

The batteries are being produced in partnership with LG Energy Solution, and are already making their way into production vehicles. The GMC Hummer EV coming this fall will use these batteries, followed by the Cadillac LYRIQ, Hummer EV SUV, and Chevrolet Silverado coming in 2022 or later. The Hummer EV will be the first to demonstrate the battery’s performance beginning later in 2021.

How much will the Chevrolet Equinox EV cost?

General Motors’ president Mark Reuss shared that the Equinox EV will be around $30,000. While not the most informative pricing announcement, it does tell us Chevy is trying to be cheaper than most of the competition. The Equinox EV could go a similar route to the Ford F-150 Lightning in bringing advanced technology and features to the EV space for its segment, while also staying close to the lowest price point. The current Chevrolet Equinox lineup starts at $25,800 with the highest Premier trim topping out at $31,000.

That makes it highly likely the Equinox EV will start just above $30,000, offering higher trims throughout the mid-$30,000s. Compared to other electric compact SUVs, that makes it one of the cheapest available. The Volkswagen ID.4 starts at $39,995, the Ford Mustang Mach-E starts at $42,895, and the Tesla Model Y starts at $39,990, for example.

General Motors is looking to plunge itself into the electric vehicle space just as many other automotive manufacturers are. The Chevrolet Equinox is one of the most popular small SUVs in America, and turning it fully electric will help launch Chevy into EVs. The automaker currently only has the Bolt as its EV offering. Despite the Bolt reviewing well, it is a compact car that is often too small for most buyers.
