Chevrolet Performance posted a teaser video on Instagram featuring the sound of a revving V8. The caption of the video reads “Can you handle more power? History is set to change 10.20.21” which has to be hinting at a more powerful V8 engine. CarScoops suggested it could be either a new crate engine or another variant of the COPO Camaro. Whatever the engine is going to be used for, who doesn’t get excited about more power?

Why would Chevrolet Performance release a new V8 engine?

One month ago Chevrolet discontinued its LT5 supercharged 6.2-liter V8 crate engine, which was available from 2018 to 2021. It would only make sense for this engine to be replaced by something more enticing for buyers. That would of course come in the form of something even more powerful than the 755-horsepower predecessor. Two of the hashtags on the Instagram post are #horsepower and #torque, which obviously means it’s a focus.

If Chevrolet Performance were to announce a new crate engine that wasn’t more powerful than the previous one after this teaser, that caption, and those hashtags, there would surely be backlash. It seems obvious what is happening, but we’ll have to wait to find out. Could it be the crate engine or could it be a new engine being introduced into one of the Chevrolet performance models?

Which models still have a V8 engine?

The Corvette Stingray, Camaro 2SS, Silverado, and Silverado HD models all still have a V8 option available. Though many automakers have dropped V8 engines recently, Chevy has maintained mostly the same lineup. For the performance vehicles, it really is a no-brainer. People aren’t buying a Camaro or Corvette because they want to drive slowly.

This new engine could be good news for owners of any of these vehicles. A crate engine more powerful than any of the others is good for owners needing a replacement and those who just want an upgrade. Regardless of the reasoning, everyone loves a more powerful engine. One that puts out more than 755-horsepower is sure to turn heads.

What’s a crate engine and which ones does Chevrolet sell?

A crate engine is simply a replacement engine. One that can be purchased from the manufacturer to be placed into any of its vehicles. Most of the engines are for replacing ones that have issues, but some are just to add more power. There are a surprisingly large number of engines available on Chevrolet’s website under the performance tab. The most powerful option is still the recently discontinued LT5 supercharged 6.2-liter V8.

It is noted that buyers must contact a local dealer for availability. The engine has been discontinued, but obviously, if inventory is already present in a dealership, it is available. In fact, Chevrolet is offering a $250 mail-in rebate with the purchase of a Chevrolet performance transmission within 180 days of purchasing a Chevrolet performance crate engine. We expect this new engine to be even more expensive than the LT5, which costs $19,995.

Chevrolet Performance is releasing a brand new V8 engine. That’s good news for any enthusiast who is looking to add more power to their vehicle. Though the cost is likely to be quite massive, the discontinued LT5 getting a replacement just a few months later is a great turnaround. With plenty of less powerful crate engines available for purchase, the next leader in power will be a welcomed addition. As first mentioned by CarScoops, the crate engine or another secret reasoning for this teaser video are both possible and would be exciting.
