Chevy’s Momentum Might Be Unstoppable in 2023
Chevrolet produces some of America’s most popular vehicles. Its Silverado has been a consistent bestseller for years. In 2023, Chevy sales have picked up momentum. If it remains on its current path, the Bow Tie brand could be looking at a successful end-of-year.
Chevy sales in Q2 grew year over year
Chevrolet sold 452,678 units in the second quarter of 2023. In the second quarter of 2022, the automaker sold 383,816 units, representing a 17.94% growth. The brand began the year strong, with 130,631 units sold. However, by February 2023, it saw a slight drop, with only 125,407 units delivered.
However, the automaker experienced significant improvement in March, with 141,080 units moved. And April was a particularly good month for Chevy sales, with 152,852 units delivered. Another slight decline happened in May, closing at 146,974. But by June, the brand had picked up the pace to 152,852.
Still, Q4 2020 remains Chevrolet’s best quarter, with 50,000 units sold. The automaker has been trying to regain its glory through recent offerings, and the numbers indicate more people are paying attention. In Q1 2023, Chevrolet sold 397,118 units, but GoodCarBadCar shows a significant increase in Q2 sales with 452,678 units. If Chevy continued on this trajectory, it would be unstoppable in 2023.
Chevy has only 2 competitors at this high sales volume
Chevrolet is a division of General Motors, one of the “Big Three” U.S. automakers. The brand has a rich history and a strong presence, especially in the truck market, with beloved models like the Silverado. Though statistics show other brands also perform well, Chevy’s only rivals at this sales volume are Toyota and Ford.
Ford leads in Q2 2023 sales with 507,751 units. That’s an 11% increase from its Q2 2022 sales of 456,813. The Blue Oval’s year-to-date 2022 sales were 1,022,690, while YTD 2023 sales were 1,131,206, representing a 10.61% gain.
On the other hand, Toyota sold 416,834 units in Q2 2022 and 476,889 in Q2 2023, signifying a 14.4% growth since 2022. Toyota outsold Ford in YTD 2022 sales with 1,036,393. The Japanese brand experienced little change in YTD 2023 sales, with a 0.83% positive change and 1,045,028 units sold.
Ford is among the oldest and most established automakers. It’s known for its broad range of vehicles, including SUVs and trucks. The brand is famous for its iconic F-Series trucks, helping establish the company as a reliable manufacturer for decades. Indeed, the F-Series has led sales for decades.
Likewise, Toyota is an automotive giant with a reputation for reliability. The company offers a diverse lineup, and its hybrid technology has given it a competitive edge.
Therefore, it’s easy to see why these three brands have higher-volume sales compared to other automakers.
Chevrolet’s diverse lineup helps the brand remain popular
Chevrolet offers a varied lineup, from fast sports cars and fuel-sipping EVs to pickup trucks and a flurry of SUVs. That last segment alone boasts the Trax, Trailblazer, Blazer, Equinox, Traverse, Tahoe, and Suburban. Electrified models include the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV. Speed fans can choose between the Corvette and Camaro. Trucks include the midsize Colorado and the Silverado. The company still produces a midsize sedan, the Malibu. There’s even the Express van.
The brand’s juggernaut, the Silverado, sold the most units in the lineup in Q2 with 141,299. However, the Trax enjoyed the biggest Q2 growth, with a 114.53% increase in selling 20,921 in Q2 2023 versus 9,752 in Q2 2022. That huge gain follows the launch of the next-gen subcompact crossover and the arrival of more units.
In addition, the Camaro had a significant 110% increase to 9,557 units from the 4,545 sold in Q2 2022. That jump is likely due to the car’s recently announced discontinuation.
