As is becoming customary for GM, Chevy just revealed shots of its next electric vehicle. Though two years off, the 2024 Chevy Blazer SS EV was deemed too good not to show. Or, so we guess? There would be little buzz with an electric version of the current Blazer, refreshed this year. Chevy chose the better path of creating something totally new and different for the SS EV. 

Is the Blazer SS EV Chevy’s response to the Mustang Mach-E?

As Chevy brought out the Camaro in response to the Mustang, so too has it done the same with the SS EV as a direct shot at the Mustang Mach-E. Let the EV wars begin. With the muscular fenders and connecting LED lightbar, the overall look of the SS EV is aggressive in a good way.

We assume the SS version is the top-of-the-line Blazer EV, but other than interiors and wheels, we expect the entire range to be almost identical-looking to this. As for the wheels themselves, they look like 22s or larger, so these may never be in production. But for now, Chevy says this is a concept of what the production Blazer will be. We hope the changes for production are minuscule. 

Probably the most prominent exterior feature is the huge side scoops in the front fenders. Besides their prominence, the upper bodyline raises to tie into it. And the lower valance is painted a contrasting black in these images, lowers as it ties into the front. Both design features direct the intakes as the focal point. And those intakes also incorporate the charging doors, a cool change from the way most of them are just bonked into the body.

What about the interior, and other specs for the Blazer SS EV? 

Unfortunately, there are few clues as to what the rest of the SS EV is about. Chevy is teasing it now to announce its complete reveal with specs, interior shots, and more. This will happen on July 18, 2022. Even CEO Mary Barra is tweeting that she can’t wait for the date. 

What we know is that the Blazer SS EV will use GM’s Ultium battery platform. Single- and dual-motors will power it, with optional all-wheel drive. This is the first EV that will garner the “SS” performance badge. 

We think it shares features with the Jaguar I-Pace

While Chevy has been fairly transparent with the upcoming Equinox EV, until now, it has kept the SS EV close to the vest. Both were announced at the same time, but the Equinox got the lion’s share of the publicity. Style-wise we see comparisons of the overall proportions, wheelbase, stance, and short overhangs, with the Jaguar I-Pace EV. But the front fascia and details are fussier on the Blazer. 

The launch is set for around this time next year, with the big reveal coming on July 18.
