Not more delays! The semiconductor chip shortage strikes again, and the Chevy Silverado 1500 is in the direct path of the storm. Production of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and the GMC Sierra is coming to a halt. 

The Chevy Silverado 1500 faces production issues 

We’re ready for the Chevy Silverado 1500, Ford F-150, Toyota Tundra, and other vehicles to catch a break. However, the global semiconductor chip shortage rages on. As a result, General Motors is stopping pickup truck production. 

According to CNBC, pickup truck production in Fort Wayne, Indiana, will come to a halt during the weeks of April 4 and April 11. This comes after the supply of chips which are critical parts of new vehicles, was expected to improve. 

General Motors also builds Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks at plants in Canada or Mexico. Larger, heavy-duty models are produced in Flint, Michigan. It’s unclear if these plants will also halt production. 

When will the Silverado 1500 get more chips? 

Hopefully, more semiconductor chips are on the way for the Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra. However, other problems related to the supply chain and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have disrupted these ideal expectations. 

General Motors President, Mark Reuss, shared that the chip supplies were finally getting a little better, but the crisis isn’t over. He said, “We aren’t through this,” and “GM is doing the best it can.” 

Automakers have been trying to make the best of chip supplies by prioritizing them for their most profitable and high-demand vehicles. Typically, chips have been reserved for large pickup trucks and SUVs. 

GM mentioned that overall, there has been an improvement in the consistent semiconductor supply during the first quarter of this year compared to the entire last year. This helped improve production and Chevy Silverado deliveries during the first three months of 2022. 

However, GM still faces uncertainty and unpredictability in the semiconductor supply base. General Motors is actively working with suppliers to solve potential issues. 

How long is the wait for a 2022 Silverado 1500? 

Generally, General Motors takes six to eight weeks to schedule a 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 order. Then they schedule the build and transport the truck to your local dealership.

But the process could take a little longer due to supply chain shortages. Wait times could be between three to nine months. But it’s possible to find an available model at your local dealership. 

You can order a 2022 Silverado 1500 only, and production recently began on February 7. Some General Motors factories can churn out 1,000 vehicles a day. But those vehicles might be built and stored until necessary chips can be added later. 

The semiconductor chips affect heated steering wheels, heated rear seats, parking sensors, heated front seats, and ventilated front seats. Luckily, springtime is here, so the heated features might not be missed as much. Also, these chips can be added later. 

The LT, RST, and LT Trail Boss trims are the hardest hit options. It’s currently easier to get the Chevy Silverado ZR2 and luxurious High Country trims. We’ll keep you updated about the semiconductor chip shortage and pickup truck production.
