Here’s What the Chevy Silverado EV Will Need to Compete With the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning
The Chevy Silverado EV will be the first full-size electric pickup truck from General Motors brand Chevrolet. The Silverado EV will face stiff competition from automakers like Ford and Rivian. Here’s everything the Silverado will need to be capable of to compete with the highly anticipated 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning.
The Chevy Silverado EV will need serious range to compete with the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning
The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning will get an estimated 230 miles of range using its standard range battery. The large battery pack will achieve an estimated 300 miles of range. The Blue Oval’s Ford Mustang Mach-E’s range estimates have been conservative so the F-150 Lightning is likely to produce even more range than expected.
If Chevy wants the Silverado EV to be competitive it will either have to produce close to 230 miles of range or exceed that number. Range anxiety is a huge concern in the EV space and the Silverado won’t be very popular if it becomes associated with that fear.
If the Silverado EV is able to achieve range close to that of the F-150 Lightning it will address a major consumer concern. Early reports claim that certain Silverado EV models will get up to 400 miles of range. If these claims are true, the full-size pickup will be historic.
The Chevy Silverado EV must offer enhanced utility to compete
The Chevy Silverado EV has to be more than just a full-size pickup truck to compete with the F-150 Lightning. The Lightning is practically a multipurpose tool thanks to multiple power outlets and special features.
The F-150 Lightning has 14.1 cubic feet of frunk space and includes power outlets in the frunk, truck bed and interior. It can function as a backup generator as well for models with Ford Pro Power Onboard. To compete, the Chevy Silverado must offer its own unique features that capitalize on its electric motor system.
Silverado models are often work trucks, so to compete with an amazing pickup like the F-150 Lightning the Silverado EV will have to have incredible capabilities. The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning has a max payload capacity of up to 2,000 pounds. If Chevy wants to compete, it better make sure that the SIlverado EV offers enough utility to take eyes away from the F-150 Lightning.
Can the Chevy Silverado EV actually compete with the Ford F-150 Lightning?
When it comes to the Ford F-150 and Chevy Silverado, the F-150 usually comes out on top. Electric vehicles offer new features and all have to produce practical range for consumers. If there was every a time for Chevy to turn the tables on Ford, it’s now. If Chevy manages to price the Silverado EV affordably and it produces the range that the automaker claims, the Ford F-150 Lightning could have a fierce rival.
According to Motor1, General Motors CEO Mary Barra says the Silverado EV will be “unmatched”. We’ll find out whether that’s true or not when the Chevy Silverado EV debuts on January 5th, 2022.
