Determining which truck is better between the Chevy Silverado 1500 and the Ford F-150 is a constant battle, and the Silverado just gained a new edge by being more reliable. 

The Chevy Silverado 1500 ranks as more reliable than the Ford F-150 

According to the J.D. Power Dependability Study, the 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 is more reliable than the 2019 Ford F-150. The 2019 Toyota Tundra is actually the most reliable option, but it’s time for other trucks to get some time in the spotlight. 

But those trucks are from 2019. They’re old! Why are we going back that far for reliability rankings? Because it takes a little time to determine how much wear and tear a vehicle can handle. 

This is something J.D. Power understands, which is why they analyzed three-year-old vehicles. They sent surveys to original owners of 2019 vehicles like the Ford F-150 and allowed them to report problems they faced. 

Why does the Silverado have a low predicted reliability rating? 

According to Consumer Reports, the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 has a predicted reliability rating of one out of five. That’s well below average, and it’s pretty concerning. But Consumer Reports is making a prediction on how reliable the truck will be. 

Consumer Reports collects data in a similar fashion, by sending out surveys to thousands of vehicle owners, allowing them to report on 17 potential trouble spots. The potential problems range from body integrity issues to transmission problems, in-vehicle electronics, and more. 

It looks like the most prevalent Silverado issues involve transmission problems for the 2015 – 2017 model years. The 2018 and 2019 models have fewer reports of transmission trouble. This could indicate that the problems were solved. Also, 2019 marked a new generation for the Silverado. 

If you switch gears and check out CarComplaints, you can see where people posted about their Silverado problems. One of the most significant issues relates to the 2017 Chevy Silverado’s eight-speed automatic transmission. 

Owners reported that the truck surges, jerks, and has hard shifts. J.D. Power acknowledges this information and lists it as one of the top three most prominent problems experienced by owners during their first 90 days of ownership. 

How many miles will a Silverado last? 

The Chevy Silverado 1500 can make it past 200,000 miles with the proper care and maintenance. For most drivers, a Silverado can provide over 20 years of use. Some Silverado models even make it past 300,000 miles. 

However, proper maintenance and care are essential. Don’t neglect your truck. Change the oil, filters, transmission fluid, etc., on a regular basis. 

It costs about $774 to maintain the Chevy Silverado annually. This is below the average cost of $936 to maintain a truck annually. So, taking care of a Silverado can provide some savings. 

We’re surprised that the Chevy Silverado 1500 is more reliable than the Ford F-150 because of its bad reputation due to transmission problems. We would recommend going for a 2019 model over a 2017 option.
