Give it up for the Chevy Suburban! It gets to celebrate a victory over the Ford Expedition, which is challenging to achieve. The Chevy Suburban outranks the Ford Expedition in one crucial area to consider when buying an SUV.

According to a study by iSeeCars, the Chevy Suburban is more likely to reach 200,000 miles than the Ford Expedition. iSeeCars analyzed over 11.8 million vehicles sound in 2020 to discover which models provide longevity and durability.

Trucks and truck-based SUVs dominate the list of longest-lasting vehicles, but Toyota hybrids and the Avalon sedan also made the list. To earn a spot on the list, at least 2.5 percent of the vehicle must reach 200,000 miles.

Only one percent of the average vehicle reaches 200,00 miles, so every vehicle to make the list is two-and-half times more likely to reach that milestone.

The Chevrolet Suburban has a 5.1 percent chance of making it to 200,000 miles, and the Ford Expedition has a 4.9 percent chance. So, the Expedition isn’t too far behind.

Is the Suburban more reliable than the Expedition?

Just because the Chevy Suburban is more likely to reach 200,000 miles doesn’t mean it’s more reliable. According to Consumer Reports, the 2022 Suburban has a predictable reliability rating of one out of five. The 2022 Ford Expedition has a predicted reliability rating of three out of five.

So, the Expedition has an average score, and the Suburban dropped below average. This could indicate that older models of the Suburban were more reliable, and the Expedition is becoming more dependable.

Consumer Reports sends out thousands of surveys to vehicle owners allowing them to report on 17 potential trouble spots ranging from the engine, transmission, paint, electronics, power equipment, and more. The data gathered from actual owners provides a predicted reliability score.

With the proper care and maintenance, Chevy Suburban models can easily reach 200,000 miles and often make it to 300,000 miles. Some owners proudly show off their Suburbans with over 500,000 miles, but they were properly maintained. Suburban models that only make it to 150,000 tend to be neglected.

The Ford Expedition is known for having a more reliable engine and is expected to last about 300,000 miles. Significant issues may start to emerge around 150,000 miles, but proper care makes all the difference.

Is the Expedition or Suburban cheaper to own?

It costs about $994 to maintain the Chevy Suburban annually. The average cost to maintain a vehicle is about $651 per year. So it is a bit above average, but it’s cheaper than options like the Land Rover Range Rover, which has a $1,241 annual maintenance cost. Also, it costs about $861 to maintain the Ford Expedition every year.

The true cost to own an Expedition for five years is $55,750. The Suburban has a five-year ownership cost of $59,667. The true cost to own includes insurance, maintenance, tax credits, repairs, taxes, fees, financing, depreciation, and fuel.

An average Suburban will depreciate by about 46 percent after five years and may have a resale value of $35,943. An average Expedition will depreciate about 51 percent and could have a resale value of $31,543.

So, while the Suburban is more likely to make it to 200,000 miles, the Expedition seems to be the more reliable option. The Suburban holds its value a little more but costs more to maintain than the Expedition. Be sure to do your homework to see how well used models were taken care of.
