For years the Chevy Tahoe has followed in the Ford Expedition’s tracks. The Chevy Tahoe was constantly placed below the Ford Expedition as it excelled in consumer rankings and critic reviews. Now the tables have turned.

The Chevy Tahoe finally overtakes the Ford Expedition

For the record, the 2021 Ford Expedition and the 2021 Chevy Tahoe are both great SUV options to consider. We know that the Tahoe has been working to climb the ranks since it was redesigned for 2021.

At first, the Ford Expedition still dominated as the most popular option, but now the Tahoe is stealing the show. According to GM Authority, the Tahoe and Chevy Suburban knocked the Expedition down to third place.

In the third quarter of 2021, the Tahoe sold 24,202 units, while the Ford Expedition sold 16,696 units. But this might not be because the Tahoe is more popular. Due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak and the ongoing computer chip shortage, the Tahoe may have had more units available.

Is the Tahoe better than the Expedition?

Each SUV has its own strengths and weaknesses to consider. You can get started in a Chevy Tahoe for about $49,000. The 2021 Ford Expedition also begins at around $49,025. These prices do not include dealership markups or destination fees.

The Expedition is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine with 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. The standard engine in the Tahoe is a 5.3-liter V6 unit with 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. You can upgrade to the 6.2-liter V8 engine for 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. Also, the 3.0-liter V8 engine pumps out 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque.

With the V6 engine, the Tahoe can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 7.7 seconds. The Expedition can reach 60 mph in about 6.9 seconds. The Expedition has a peppy acceleration, but the brakes are a bit squishy.

The Tahoe has more confident brakes, but the steering can feel a little vague. Its heft can be felt around curves. Both the Expedition and Tahoe provide a smooth ride, but the Expedition features a quieter interior.

Does the Tahoe or Expedition have better features?

The Chevy Tahoe may be more attractive because it was recently redesigned. The Ford Expedition was last updated for 2018, but it doesn’t seem outdated yet. Both provide large, spacious seats in each row.

An 8.0-inch infotainment system is standard in the Expedition, while the Tahoe comes with a standard 10.2-inch screen. Both options come with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Both SUVs feature optional rear-seat entertainment systems with plenty of USB ports too.

When properly equipped, the Expedition can tow up to 9,300 lbs, and the Tahoe can haul up to 8,400 lbs. The Expedition can carry a payload of up to 1,750 lbs, while the Tahoe can carry a payload of up to 1,927 lbs.

While the Tahoe features more engine choices and nicer interior materials, the Expedition might be more comfortable. We recommend giving both options a test drive. But for now, the Tahoe holds the crown.
