When Ford launched the Ford F-150 Lightning all-electric truck, the company made a big deal of its ability to power a house if the power goes down. We even saw stories of people struggling during storms using their Lightnings to power their homes. But now, Chevy is saying, “Ours can, too!” Chevy says the 2024 Silverado RST can power a home for up to 21 days.

Anything you can do …

Is this a case of anything you can do, I can do better? That’s tough to say, because, how big is your house? But, in a recent marketing email Chevy says that with the new Ultium Home accessory charging unit, you can charge your Silverado EV and keep the lights on at home for up to 21 days. Of course, there are several caveats, like you need a truck with bi-directional charging capabilities, the right connections in your garage, and a variety of appliances that use 7.7 kWh or less.

Regardless, it’s nice to know that the new Silverado RST has the option, should you need it.

Chevy hasn’t listed the price of the home accessories you’ll need for home power. Ford’s system costs $3,895, and you’ll need to buy the $1,310 Ford Charge Station Pro, which provides bi-directional charging. And, that’s before installation. Ford’s system can keep a home that uses 30-kWh of juice running for up to 10 days.

What is the range of a Silverado EV truck?

The new Silverado RST, which is expected to arrive next year, promises a large battery. Chevy is targeting a 400-mile range on a full charge. In the Silverado’s case, it will use a 24-module version of GM’s Ultium battery pack. The Cadillac Lyriq and the upcoming Blazer EV use a similar Ultium skateboard platform.

How many reservations does Chevy have for the Silverado EV?

According to a recent survey from Recurrent Auto, about 140,000 people have paid $100 to reserve a new 2024 Chevy Silverado EV truck. That’s a ton of people, for sure, who have raised their hand to say, “I want an electric Silverado.” That number is higher than some others, like the Rivian, for which 90,000 people put down a refundable $1,000 deposit and the 65,000 that signed up for Hummer SUV. But those trucks are double, or even triple, the price of the 2024 Chevy EV truck.

However, those numbers pale in comparison to the estimated 1.27 million people who have placed a $100 order for a Tesla Cybertruck that has been repeatedly delayed. More than 200,000 put down $100 for a new Ford F-150 Lightning. But, it’s clear people want electric trucks.

The Silverado EV should debut in 2023 with the WT model, which starts at $39,900. In the fall, you’ll be able to get a fully loaded RST First Edition model that will have pretty much every option, for $105,000. Later versions will include a Trail Boss version and others and Chevy is targeting the $50,000 to $80,000 range for the trucks.
