Off-road trucks are hot, and we’re in somewhat of a golden age with the Ram TRX, Chevy Silverado ZR2, and Ford Raptor all duking it out for supremacy. But if you look a bit down from those top-level trucks, you’ll see the 2022 Ram Rebel and 2022 Chevy Silverado Trail Boss, two trucks that have extreme off-road chops without the extreme off-road prices. Ford does make the FX4 package for all of its’ F-150 pickups. And Chevy does make a ZR2 option, but that truck plays in a higher price bracket.

The 2022 Ram Rebel was clearly Chevy’s target with the 2022 Trail Boss. Both trucks start at about $51,000 and offer two tons of off-road fun.

What’s new for 2022?

While the Ram 1500 and Chevy Silverado haven’t been significantly upgraded since 2019, the Chevy got a substantial facelift for 2022 that includes a fully redesigned interior. The new interior has a new console, a horizontal instrument panel, and access to Google Assistant. The grille is also new and easily spotted by its massive black egg-crate look and new daytime running lamps.

The Ram didn’t need an interior upgrade. In Rebel trim with the two-tone interior, large touchscreen, and soft-touch materials, it was the bogey for Chevy to hit.

The basics of the 2022 Chevy Silverado Trail Boss

They are both four-wheel-drive trucks with a slight lift over their more pedestrian counterparts.

The 2022 Trail Boss gets a two-inch suspension lift over the regular Silverado and the Z71 off-road package. It has a locking rear differential, skid plates, and Rancho mono-tube off-road shocks. It gets 18-inch wheels and special graphics. The Custom has three engine options: A 310-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder, a 5.3-liter V8 with 355 horsepower, and a 3-liter Duramax turbo diesel.

On the LT, you can order the hotrod 6.2-liter with 420 horsepower. Chevy also offers a Performance Upgrade Package that adds an intake and exhaust. The PUP increases horsepower to 435 horsepower. It is the same, sort of, as the GMC Sierra AT4.

The 2022 Ram Rebel uses the same formula. It has long-travel Bilstein shocks, and a special grille, skid plates, and tow hooks. It has 17-inch wheels with 33-inch tires. The Rebel has four engine options. It comes standard with the 3.6-liter V6 that makes a healthy 305 horsepower. But, you can order the 5.7-liter Hemi, the 5.7-liter with the eTorque mild hybrid system, and even a 3-liter turbo diesel V6 that makes 480 lb-ft of torque. The eTorque is an electric-assist that helps the truck make an additional 130 lb-ft of torque and helps fuel economy.

The Trail Boss comes in two flavors, Custom and LT The Custom starts at $51,295 and has a host of off-road goodies, as well as remote start, USB ports, the raised hood and graphics, and the Z71 off-road package. The LT starts at $53,195 and comes with a lot more goodies. The LT has, for example, Chevy’s larger 12.4-inch touch screen, 10-way power driver’s seat, tilt/telescoping steering, cargo area lighting, and some leather trim.

The 2022 Ram Rebel comes in one trim, but with options it can quickly become a $60,000 truck.
