Sometimes a standard pickup truck isn’t enough to get the job done. In those cases, Chevrolet offers two heavy-duty pickup trucks: the Chevy Silverado 2500 HD and 3500 HD. And for the 2021 model year, these trucks boast even more features, offering great value.

What’s new with the Chevy Silverado HD

Along with substantial updates for 2021, Chevy Silverado HD trucks include more features and capabilities. It’s best-in-class for towing and offers tons of trailering technology, according to Chevrolet. And the 2021 Silverado 3500 HD’s max towing capacity increased by 500 pounds to 36,000 pounds.

The Silverado HD’s new trailering technology makes it easier to tow large, heavy objects. Available features include a trailer-length indicator, making it safer to change lanes with a trailer; a jack-knife alert, warning of potential jack-knife situations; and cargo bed view enhancement, making it easier to align and hook up a gooseneck or fifth-wheel trailer. Plus, there are guidelines and a trailer-angle indicator for the rear trailer view, making it easier to back up a trailer; and rear side-view enhancement, showing a split view of the left and right sides of the truck and trailer when in reverse (previously seen only when traveling forward).

Four special-edition Silverado HD trims are new for 2021: Carhartt, Midnight, Z71 Sport, and Z71 Chrome Sport. Also, two new exterior colors are available: Mosaic Black Metallic and Cherry Red Tintcoat.

The 2021 Chevy Silverado HD at a glance

The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado HD offers various cab styles, bed lengths, and interior options. But not everyone likes its exterior. The Silverado HD’s interior pales in comparison to competitors, Car and Driver reports.

The Silverado 2500 HD and 3500 HD have a standard 6.6-liter V8 engine producing 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque. That’s paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. The second engine option is a Duramax diesel 6.6-liter V8 generating 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of torque. The motor hasn’t changed, but it’s now paired with an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission. You can select between rear-wheel and all-wheel drive and between a single- and dual-rear-wheel axle.

Chevy Silverado HD models come with eight cameras that provide 15 unique views, making towing feel safer. The standard infotainment system is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There’s also a larger eight-inch touchscreen with an upgraded audio system. Plus, the infotainment system can store information about multiple trailers, and you can control some trailer functions through a smartphone app.

As far as advanced safety features, expect a forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure warning.

What the Silverado HD can do

According to Chevrolet, the updated 2021 Silverado 3500 HD can tow up to 36,000 pounds when properly equipped. That makes it best in its class for trailering. To tow that much, you’ll need the Silverado 3500 HD Work Truck with a regular cab, dual-rear wheels, two-wheel drive, a 6.6-liter Duramax diesel engine, a 10-speed Allison transmission, and the Max Tow Package. This version also has an updated suspension and different wheels.

Overall, Chevy Silverado HD trucks come in five trim levels, with starting prices between $36,595 and $64,095. The Silverado HD was already a highly competent truck for people who need a massive pickup. And now, the 2021 models provide even better value thanks to plenty of features.
