It’s no secret that Chevy and Ford are a little competitive with one another. Okay, a lot competitive. So to learn that Chevy is following up the Ford F-150 Lighting with the Chevy Silverado EV isn’t at all shocking. Still, the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning has already filled up all of its reservations, and it’s unlikely that all of the Lightning’s more than 200,000 reservation holders will be able to get the exact Lightning they want when they want it. An electric pickup truck that popular is hard to compete with. Can the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV do it?

Both the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning and 2024 Chevy Silverado EV offer a cheap base model

Both the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning and the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV are releasing a cheaper base model of their new electric pickup truck. These will be followed by more expensive trucks that come with more bells and whistles. In the case of the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV, the more expensive version will be a heck of a price jump.

The 2024 Chevy Silverado EV price starts at $39,900. This is for the Work Truck, which is Chevrolet’s version of a base model. Sounds pretty reasonable, right? Well, consider this: after that, Chevy will be releasing another version of the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV RST limited edition at a staggering price of $105,000.

On the other hand, Ford’s base model 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning price starts at $39,974. This is for the Ford Lightning Pro. After that, the next Lightning up Ford’s electric truck ladder is the Lightning XLT, which starts at $52,974. That’s a pretty big price jump on its own. Yet when you compare it to the Chevy Silverado EV, you might feel as though you’re saving money by buying the Ford Lightning instead.

What comes in the Lightning and the Silverado EV?

The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning comes with a 2.4kW battery. It can also go 230 miles on a single charge, and it has Ford’s suite of safety features known as Co-Pilot360. There’s also an extended range battery available, which lets the Lightning up to 300 miles on a single charge. The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Pro also has a 12-inch touchscreen.

Chevy is planning on releasing the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV in the spring of 2023. The Work Truck will be released first, followed by the electric Silverado RST. The RST will be able to make 664 hp and 780 lb-ft of torque. GM also says it will be pretty fast, and able to get from 0 to 60 in just 4.5 seconds. The Silverado RST will also have hands-free highway driving and 24-inch wheels.

The 2024 Chevy Silverado EV should have better range

The 2024 Chevy Silverado EV is going to have a range of up to 400 miles on a single charge. That’s a pretty impressive number, and is sure to make many people considering an electric vehicle really take another look at the Silverado EV. On the other hand, the 2021 Ford F-150 Lightning will have a range of about 300 miles. While still a respectable number, if all else is equal between the two electric trucks, you might be inclined to go with the one you’ll have to charge less frequently.

In addition, the Silverado EV can handle higher chargine power. It has a capability of 350 kilowatts, while the Lightning can only handle 150 kilowatts. That’s a pretty significant difference. The Silverado EV also has more usable electricity, at 10.2 kilowatts to the Lightning’s 9.6 kilowatts.

The 2022 Ford Lightning and 2024 Chevy Silverado EV will be out before we know it, and we’ll have to see how well they do against one another. With the Ford Lightning’s numerous reservations, it would be quite a feat for the Chevy Silverado EV to be able to compete with it, but it’s entirely possible.
