The Jeep Compass has been a part of the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles lineup since 2007. One of the original crossover SUVs for the Jeep product line, the Compass was intended for off-road driving.

At the recent Guangzhou Auto Show in China, FCA released a new Jeep Compass. The improved model boasts significant upgrades and could be a good indication of what to expect from the upcoming 2022 model.

China’s version of the 2022 Jeep Compass

Industry experts are excited to share the details of the newest version of the Jeep Compass. The upgraded interior should create long-awaited competition in the subcompact crossover market.

The newly revealed Jeep Compass appears to have minor exterior changes, including a new fascia and redesigned front bumper. The seven boxes on the chrome front grill remain for easy brand recognition. The headlights are a bit wider and now have LED lights, giving the small crossover an aggressive look.

The two-tone interior includes a digital gauge instrument panel and a large 10.3-inch infotainment system that is sure to please drivers and passengers alike, CarWale reported. A leather-wrapped multifunctional steering wheel is available in select trim levels. Uconnect 5 comes standard in FCA’s vehicles and will likely carry over to the new Jeep Compass.

The air-conditioning controls have been redesigned with improved vent placement below the multimedia system. Technology features include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, as well as smartphone charging availability.

How the changes could indicate what’s coming to the U.S.

MotorTrend predicts the Cherokee-inspired styling coming out of China might indicate what we’ll see stateside in the 2022 or 2023 Jeep Compass.

In China, there are reports of a 1.3-liter turbocharged engine under the hood, which is what’s found in America’s current version of the Jeep Renegade. The turbocharged unit will likely replace the 2.4-liter 180 hp that currently powers the 2021 Compass.

The newest version of the Jeep Compass Trailhawk edition is expected to include a blacked-out grille, tow hooks on the front bumper, and increased ground clearance.

MotorTrend was unable to confirm future updates with the manufacturer but was confident in saying, “We wager these updates will eventually make their way to our Compass in the next year or two.”

History of the Jeep Compass

In 2011, the Compass received a face-lift, comparing its look to the Jeep Grand Cherokee. With the improved suspension, upgraded interior, and increased standard features, the crossover became a popular choice for SUV enthusiasts.

Five years later, amid recurring problems, the second generation was released. Jeep intended to cancel the Compass line in 2015 but decided to keep it going to provide a more diverse SUV lineup.

Using the same platform as the Renegade, the Compass began to offer four trim levels. The Compass had limited off-road capabilities, so the four-wheel-drive Trailhawk provided welcomed off-road upgrades. The 2.4-liter, 4-cylinder engine allowed for enhanced performance on this subcompact SUV.

For Jeep’s 80th anniversary, a special-edition Latitude trim level was released, offering improved features for the 2021 model. Unlike other Jeep vehicles, the Compass is geared toward first-time Jeep buyers and those who prefer driving on paved surfaces.

The expectation of a 2022 or 2023 Compass is a good sign this model line is alive and well, with planned upgrades to keep the vehicle competitive in a crowded segment.
