When you read the words “a V8-powered, rear-drive family sedan,” what car do you think of? Most likely a Dodge Charger, Chevy SS, or maybe even a Pontiac G8. But whatever comes to mind, I bet the answer isn’t Mazda6. However, for one tuner in China, those words all ring true when it comes to his modified 2016 Mazda6.

This unique Mazda6 has a much larger engine under its hood

The 2016 Mazda6, which is known as the Mazda Atenza overseas, comes standard with a naturally aspirated SkyActiv-G 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine. However, the owner of this particular Mazda6 wasn’t that happy with the car’s power, so he swapped it for a supercharged 2.5-liter SkyActiv-G. It turned out that still wasn’t enough power, so they ended up turning to a tuner shop called OMAS to go a different route.

The folks at OMAS converted the car to rear-wheel drive, but while it was under the knife, they also changed out its engine. In place of the supercharged SkyActiv engine, OMAS installed a 4.3-liter V8 engine and automatic transmission out of a Lexus LS430. According to Car Scoops, this engine was used in the Lexus LS from 2000 to 2006 and pumped out 290 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. In contrast, the car’s stock engine put out around 160 hp, so the power increase alone was a nice bump in performance.

The V8 engine swap required some extensive modifications to fit

As you can imagine, stuffing the large V8 engine beneath the fenders of the Mazda6 took a lot of effort. Engine Swap Depot reported that the firewall and transmission tunnel was cut out to fit the new engine, transmission, and rear-wheel drivetrain. Speaking of the drivetrain, the new rear end and subframe were sourced from a 2008 Toyota Crown. The car’s engine cooling system was upgraded as well, in addition to receiving a new fuel tank and exhaust system.

While all of those modifications are impressive and exhaustive, Car Scoops notes that the most impressive part of this modified Mazda6 is its factory-like appearance. From the outside, you would never know what lies underneath this car’s hood, except when the driver buries the throttle. It even looks completely stock on the inside, too, so no one would be able to tell even if they were sitting inside the car.

How much power does a standard Mazda6 make?

In the U.S., the equivalent 2016 Mazda6 came with a 2.5-liter SkyActive engine that made 184 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque. That’s not bad, however, it was made more for fuel efficiency than for power and performance. In fact, it was even EPA-rated to achieve up to 40 mpg. However, this V8 Mazda6 probably doesn’t get anywhere near that.

There aren’t any other finer details on this OMAS-tuned Mazda6 other than a short video of it doing a fat burnout and then taking off. Then again, that’s what you’re supposed to do in a V8-powered sedan. It doesn’t matter if it’s a Dodge Charger, a Chevy SS, or even a Mazda6.
