Chrysler is discontinuing its 300 sedan after many years of familiar fascias and affordable luxury. However, the 300 wasn’t the only notable Chrysler car of the last decade. The Chrysler 200 was an even more economical vehicle in the marque’s lineup. So, is a 200 sedan, like the 2017 Chrysler 200, a better used car option than the larger, more luxurious Chrysler 300? 

Do Chrysler 200 hold their value?

Although the Chrysler 200 drove into discontinuation station in 2017, the model left behind years of used options. Unfortunately for current owners, the 200 doesn’t hold its value very well. For instance, Kelley Blue Book (KBB) says the entry-level 2017 Chrysler 200 LX has a fair purchase price of around $14,471. That’s down from $23,210 when the LX was new. 

The 200C Platinum model suffered worse depreciation; the range-topping 2017 trim has a fair purchase price of about $17,051. That’s a decrease of around 41% from its original starting price of $28,890. Earlier models show even more significant value loss. For instance, KBB says a 2012 200S with average mileage has a fair value of around $7,802, down from $27,830 when it was new. 

Is a Chrysler 300 considered a luxury car?

A Chrysler 300 is an affordable luxury alternative to premium badges like BMW and Lexus, albeit with less refinement. However, the 300 has enjoyed a long tenure and, as a result, the 300 has many good options for used car shoppers. However, a used Chrysler 300 is another example of a depreciating asset. For instance, KBB says the 2018 Chrysler 300C has a fair purchase value of $24,415, around $18,000 less than its initial starting price. 

However, depreciation could be a good prospect for potential owners who want a 200 or 300. Looking at used models like the 2018 and 2017 years of both sedans could save car hunters thousands. 

Is a Chrysler 200 a V6 or V8?

The Chrysler 200 packed a couple of different engines over the course of its production. The standard, if anemic, powerplant is the 2.4L inline four-cylinder mill. In 2017, the four-cylinder engine produced just 184 horsepower, quite a bit less than its larger sibling, the V6-powered 300. Moreover, 200 packed an optional 3.6L Pentastar V6, producing as much as 295 horsepower in later model years. 

In comparison, the Chrysler 300 has a larger allotment of engines. For instance, the final model year of the Chrysler 300 packs a standard V6, an optional 5.7L Hemi V8, and a 485-horsepower 6.4L V8 in the limited-edition 300C. 

Is a Chrysler 200 a luxury car?

The Chrysler 200 isn’t a luxury car. Instead, the car is more of an economical alternative to vehicles like the Ford Fusion. The 200 did, however, offer a more sensible standard powerplant compared to the larger 300. Moreover, the 200 packed optional AWD in some V6-equipped models. 
While the smaller Chrysler model isn’t a true luxury car, it’s a viable used car option for potential owners. However, for those car buyers who want a posher vehicle, the Chrysler 300 is an affordable luxury alternative to the Dodge Charger and Toyota Avalon.
