Chrysler Ditches Airflow Concept, Will Redesign its First EV
After years of developing its first EV model from concept to potential production model, Chrysler has pulled the plug on the Airflow EV. Now, Chrysler says it will redesign its next-generation electric vehicle to match modern style and technology standards.
Is the Chrysler Airflow EV going into production?
Chrysler has announced that its first EV will still go into production, but its appearance and branding are back on the drawing board.
A new report from MotorTrend says that Chrysler CEO Chris Feuell axed the original Airflow concept to reach for a totally new design. According to the story, the EV model will keep the platform and technology that have been in development but will also feature a totally new visual design and name.
What will Chrysler’s first electric vehicle look like?
MT says the first Chrysler EV will have a completely new appearance package.
While we don’t have any official images of the redesigned EV, MT reports that it will go in a more modern aesthetic direction than the original Airflow Concept design. We do know what segment the Chrysler EV will compete with, however.
MT says it will still be a five-passenger midsize crossover. That’s no surprise, as two-row crossovers have become the bread and butter of the automotive industry.
Which models will Chrysler’s EV compete against?
The redesigned Chrysler EV will compete against models like the Ford Mustang Mach E and Model Y.
It is an ultra-competitive segment that has shown promise for EV manufacturers. And it’s no surprise – these models offer sleek, sporty styling with everyday practicality. They offer drivers ways to have their cake and eat it, too.
Chrysler says it will release multiple EV models in the coming years in various segments.
Does Stellantis have any other electric vehicles?
Unsurprisingly, the first Stellantis EV in North America will be the Ram 1500 REV pickup truck.
The Ram 1500 REV claims to have a maximum driving range of 500 miles and a towing capacity of 14,000 pounds. Unlike other EV trucks like the Ford F-150 Lightning or Rivian R1T, the Ram 1500 REV will have a small gasoline range-extending engine.
Seeing Stellantis brands like Chrysler and Ram actively developing electric vehicle models is encouraging. However, other OEMs like Ford and Chevrolet have already rolled out multiple electric vehicles. Stellantis must get its EVs on the road or risk having its peers pull away.
