Unidentified Flying Objects have always been highly classified by all US government agencies. Over the years little bits have leaked out and probably thousands of books have been written about the subject. But still, the official reports and documentation have been hidden. Until now. The CIA just released all of its UFO-related files in an amazing document dump. These definitely aren’t flying cars.

Amounting to thousands of docs the CIA says this is the motherload-all of its records. You can search them at the Black Vault online archive. These government files are declassified and available for the first time according to The Guardian. Whether you’re a believer or not there is something for everyone unless little green men give you nightmares. 

The site was assembled by John Greenewald Jr, who says on the site “there may be no way to verify that” the CIA actually released everything it has on UFOs. Unfortunately, because of the format that some documents are done in they can be hard to read. Greenwald told Motherboard that the CIA used an outdated format so some files are harder to read than others. 

“The CIA has made it incredibly difficult to use their records in a reasonable manner,” he wrote to Motherboard. “This outdated format makes it very difficult for people to see the documents, and use them, for any research purpose.” But some of the documents that can be gleaned sound more like encounters seen in movies than reports of actual close encounters. Especially, the one we read about a flying object seen in and around Azerbaijan is especially chilling.

Some of this action may have to do with three defense department videos leaked last April. These showed flying objects captured from cockpit recordings during pilot training flights. The back and forth of pilots watching the objects and describing velocity and shapes is quite compelling. Even if you’re a nonbeliever it leaves you wondering what the heck you and those pilots are looking at.

There were national security concerns after the leak about who or what these objects were. Lawmakers in both the House and Senate demanded the defense department “detect, analyze, and catalog UAPs (unidentified aerial phenomena) that could potentially pose a threat to US national security.” The concern on their part was not that aliens might invade the US. Instead, some were afraid that Russia had made a technological leap ahead of the US which could pose a threat.

The directive specifically asked if “the threat they pose to US military assets and installations” was a problem for America. 

It is unclear how and what the CIA used these documents for. It is also unclear how these documents were pursued and whether any conclusions were drawn. UFO activity seemed to ramp up after WWII with thousands of sightings reported in newspapers in the 1950s and 1960s, leading to a gang of science fiction movies and books. Theories and conspiracies have run the gamut, causing many to scoff at the idea of flying saucers and little green Martians.
