You expect to find a few things on top of your car from time to time. Perhaps a flier for a business. Or maybe a parking ticket. However, very few people expect to find a bomb placed precariously on their car

A couple in Colorado Springs were shocked to find an apparent pipe bomb on their truck in a car park

Ashlee Maltz was terrified to find what appeared to be a pipe bomb on their car. The device, a taped tube with a visible fuse, sat behind the cab of the couple’s RAM pickup truck. It was perched on the bed cover, fuse touching the rear windows.

Maltz told the local news that she was disturbed to find the device on her truck. “I just was freaking out because I had my daughter with me.” Tragically, she was also concerned about what may have happened had she not located the apparent pipe bomb in time. “Like, if I hadn’t caught that, who knows what could have happened?”

She called her husband, Jordan, and texted him a picture of the suspected bomb from the car park. They then contacted the police. Colorado Springs police officers responded to the apartment complex with their explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team. Fortunately, these explosive specialists receive extensive training in handling bombs and destructive devices. As such, the team removed the device without incident. Details about the device and its nature are unclear.

Still, while a pipe bomb in plain sight lacks the sophistication of the sort of car bombs criminals and warfighters have employed, it’s extremely dangerous. If you suspect any destructive device around, on, or on top of your vehicle, contact the authorities immediately. As the adage goes: It’s always better to be safe than sorry.
