The 2023 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is the 18th Highlander Hybrid model year. Japanese automaker Toyota had plenty of time to tinker with the midsize hybrid SUV’s design language. The brand has been producing some of the best hybrid vehicles on the market in recent years, and the Highlander Hybrid is no exception.

Toyota’s 2023 Highlander Hybrid starts at $40,645. It uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors to make 243 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. The base model LE gets 35 miles per gallon combined. It comes standard with heated outside mirrors, a height-adjustable power liftgate, and a leather-trimmed steering wheel.

The midsize hybrid SUV also includes standard full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, road sign assist, and a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert. The Highlander Hybrid comes with generous standard driver assistance and safety features, as well as some creature comforts to justify its high starting price.

The Highlander Hybrid may come in some nice colors, and it has great features, but the real reason to buy the Highlander Hybrid is because of its fuel capacity and gas mileage. The Highlander Hybrid has a 17.9-gallon fuel tank. This means that the midsize hybrid SUV is capable of traveling for over 626 miles on a full tank of gas.

Some Highlander Hybrid trim levels can travel for over 635 miles on a full tank of gas. Few SUV models have as much driving range as the Highlander Hybrid. Most small cars don’t even get as much driving range because of smaller gas tanks.

In short, this means that Toyota Highlander Hybrid owners refuel their vehicles fewer times than the average driver. Fewer trips to the gas station mean hundreds of dollars in savings every year. Multiply those annual fuel savings by the average new vehicle ownership period (8.4 years), and the Highlander Hybrid becomes one of the most affordable midsize SUVs to own long-term.

Highlander models are known for their longevity. If a Highlander Hybrid could last just as long, it could be kept for over 14 years based on the average annual driving range. Drivers would save thousands of dollars on fuel if they kept the Highlander Hybrid for as long as it could potentially last. U.S. News & World Report praises its smooth ride, refined cabin, and many standard features.
