Nissan just released four new concept electric vehicles, and they are unlike anything else on the market. It’s all part of their plan to launch 15 electric vehicles by 2030. Nissan isn’t alone in this endeavor; car manufacturers are embracing the electric vehicle revolution, and coming out with cars, SUVs, and trucks that run on battery. The Nissan Surf-Out is one such concept pickup truck. Nissan recently revealed the concept truck and it’s so cool, it just might make the Nissan Frontier obsolete.

The Nissan Surf-Out is an off-road ready electric pickup truck

The Nissan Surf-Out is one of four concept electric vehicles that Nissan just revealed. In addition to the Nissan Surf-Out, Nissan revealed the Chill-Out, Max-Out, and Hang-Out. The Nissan Surf-Out is an electric truck that is ready to go off-roading. While there’s no word yet on whether this concept truck is headed for production, it could challenge Nissan’s internal combustion engine pickup, the Frontier.

We don’t know much about the Nissan Surf-Out yet. In photos it’s an orange pickup truck with massive wheels that look like something from a dystopian movie. In contrast, renderings of the Nissan Surf-Out show a rear exterior screen with typed hearts and “Hi!,” as well as a smiley face. It would be incredible to see such a truck become a reality.

Can the Nissan Surf-Out compete with the Nissan Frontier?

The Nissan Frontier is a customer favorite, so the Nissan Surf-Out would have to be a pretty impressive truck to compete with it. The Nissan Frontier comes with one engine, a 3.8-liter V6 that makes 310-hp, matched with a nine-speed automatic transmission. In addition, all Nissan Frontier trucks now come with forward collision warning, a rear door alert, and a driver awareness sensor.

The base model 2022 Nissan Frontier price is $29,015. This is the 2022 Nissan Frontier S King Cab 4×2, and if you want the extended cab, you can expect to pay at least $31,715. You can only get the extended cab on the S and SV trim levels. No matter which cab you get, your 2022 Frontier will come with a six-foot bed. You can, however, add four-wheel drive for an extra $3,200.

Nissan has major electric vehicle plans

Nissan has a serious plan to go electric by 2020. It calls this its “Ambition” plan. Nissan’s chief executive, Makoto Uchida, said, “The role of companies to address societal needs is increasingly heightened…With Nissan Ambition 2030, we will drive the new age of electrification, advance technologies to reduce carbon footprint and pursue new business opportunities. We want to transform Nissan to become a sustainable company that is truly needed by customers and society.”

Nissan plans on making its lithium-ion battery technology better, as well as introducing cobalt-free battery technology. RoadShow says this will reduce battery costs by 65% by 2028, which would be a huge advantage for electric vehicles.

Although we don’t know if the Nissan Surf-Out will become an actual pickup truck in the future, it would be a revolutionary style of electric truck if it did. It’s not like traditional pickup trucks, even electric ones like the Ford Lightning. It isn’t as angular and futuristic as the Tesla Cybertruck. The Nissan Surf-Out just might be able to carve out its own niche and be the kind of unique electric pickup truck that people are looking for.
