Conor McGregor Makes Stylish Film Debut in Yellow Ferrari for ‘Road House’ Remake
Jake Gyllenhaal fans have long known the actor had a big action movie on the way. In early 2023, he and a crew arrived at a huge UFC fight so they could film him running past the crowd and up to the Octagon. Now it’s emerged he was filming a flashback for Amazon Prime’s remake of 1989’s Road House. UFC fighter Connor MacGregor will star opposite Gyllenhaal, making his acting debut as the film’s antagonist.
The original Road House (1989) starred Patrick Swayze as a bouncer who had to protect his small Missouri town from a corrupt businessman. It looks like 2024’s remake will have a very similar plot, with two key differences. It will be set in the Florida Keys. And the main character (Elwood Dalton as played by Gyllenhaal) will be a retired UFC fighter.
The film was directed by Doug Liman who also directed The Bourne Identity. But it appears to be an action comedy that will have more in common with Liman’s 2005 film, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, than the more serious Bourne series. And the Florida location gives it a bit of a sun-drenched look like Spring Breakers or even Pain & Gain.
Alright, on to the cars. The first trailer doesn’t show what car Gyllenhaal’s Dalton is driving/living in at the beginning of the film. But when he’s offered a bouncer job, the bar owner says, “I can pay you good money, judging by your car you need that.” Dalton responds, “Well, I like my car.”
The sedan appears to be a squarish European sport compact from the 80s or 90s. My money is on a BMW, but I would love to see a return to the Mercedes 240 D Gyllenhaal’s Tony Hastings drove in Nocturnal Animals.
The film uses McGregor’s villain’s car to differentiate him from Jake Gyllenhaal. He is either an evil real estate developer, or a thug hired by one. And he drives a yellow Ferrari convertible. It is a mid-engine car and appears to be the 488 Spider which Ferrari sold from 2016 through 2020. It is definitely not any of Ferrari’s 2024 models.
