While U.S. News did choose some of the coolest used SUVs to buy, the 2011 Toyota FJ Cruiser was at the top. This rugged Toyota SUV does it all with its funky looks, excellent safety scores, and off-road capability. While the FJ Cruiser didn’t stay in the lineup for too long, it has a bit of a cult following these days.

This Toyota SUV has room for five and 260 hp to power whatever adventure you take. But don’t mistake this for an off-roading vehicle; it is an on-road SUV that can go off-road. Buyers could opt for rear or four-wheel drive, the latter of which is better for those adventures. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2011 Toyota FJ Cruiser high scores on its necessary crashworthiness tests.

While the 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee is an affordable midsize SUV, it’s also one of the coolest used SUVs to buy right now. Not everyone loves the Grand Cherokee, but it is a reliable sport utility vehicle that can also go off-road. With various engine choices and plenty of ways to customize the Jeep, it suits the needs of many buyers.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee a four-star overall safety rating when equipped with rear-wheel drive. Equipped with all-wheel drive, the Grand Cherokee received a five-star overall safety rating. That makes this an exciting and safe choice.

Don’t overlook the Subaru Outback

Not everyone would agree that the 2020 Subaru Outback is cool, but it is capable and well-equipped for the money. It has plenty of space in the cargo area and even more room for people in the cabin. Some of the standard features on the Outback include adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. The IIHS gave the 2020 Subaru Outback high marks on its tests and awarded it the Top Safety Pick designation as well.
