That number doesn’t include officers struck by other motorists while outside their patrol vehicle—an additional 9 deaths. That’s a remarkably low accident rate, especially given how often officers are on the road, sometimes at high speeds during emergencies. The statistics suggest that officers’ training plays a huge role in keeping them safe, even if a crash into a Dunkin’ Donuts makes the news.
