The Chevy C8 Corvette has proven to be a highly capable sports car, with its nimble handling and quick acceleration. Fording through water is a capability that you would not expect to see with the Corvette, though. However, recently, on a flooded street in Florida, a Corvette drove through the water like a submarine.

Miami area floodwater is no match for this Chevy C8 Corvette

Deep water and cars are typically not a good combination. Other than some submarine car concept vehicles and off-road vehicles with high ground clearance, cars are not designed for driving through deep water. 

Driving through floodwater is especially dangerous. A car driving through floodwater can get swept off the road. Also, a driver might not be able to see obstacles that could be in the water.

However, these potential dangers didn’t deter a driver of a black Chevy C8 Corvette in the Miami area. Southern Florida got hit by a tropical storm system earlier this month. Some locations had over a foot of rainfall, resulting in flash floods.

Given the dangers of driving through floodwater, it’s surprising that the C8 Corvette in Florida even attempted the feat. As seen in the video, not only did the Corvette make the attempt, it was successful in completing it as well. What’s remarkable about it is how casual the drive seems — as if a Corvette driving through the water like a submarine is an everyday occurrence.

At one point, the Corvette was mostly submerged underwater. The hood and headlights were completely below the waterline, and waves slashed over the windshield and roof. Also, rooster tails of water shot from the exhaust tips of the Corvette. Plus, the Corvette created a bow wave like a moving boat. 

The Corvette made it onto dry land with no visible damage, as reported by Motor1. However, all of that excess water could not have been good for the sports car. If you look closely at the video, you can see water running out of the base of the passenger door. This suggests that there was a great deal of water inside the cabin. Also, the air intakes undoubtedly sucked up much water. 

Are there any submarine cars like in the ‘James Bond’ film ‘The Spy Who Loved Me?’

People have long been fascinated by submarine cars, especially after the 1977 James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me. In the film, James Bond drove a Lotus Esprit that transformed into a submarine. Inspired by the film, Swiss company Rinspeed unveiled the sQuba concept submarine car in 2008. The sQuba is the first world’s first car that one can drive both on land and underwater. Also, more recently, Elon Musk said that Tesla has designs for a submarine car. However, he hasn’t yet revealed the design.

There are not any production submarine cars that are currently available, though. We can only dream big for now — or drive through flooded streets like the Chevy C8 Corvette in Florida.
