Could the Hummer EV Show up in Fast and Furious 9?
Ahead of this year’s Super Bowl car commercials, the trailer for Fast and Furious 9 finally dropped. Up until now, the only thing we’ve really known about the film is a few of the cars that will appear in it. The trailer, though, has already revealed quite a few things about FF9’s contents. However, something that one of the film’s stars, Ludacris, discussed recently, has us speculating.
The FF9 is expected to debut on TV during the Super Bowl, as will the teaser for the upcoming electric GMC Hummer truck. With what Ludacris said about going electric, does that mean the Hummer EV will show up in the newest Fast and Furious?
What the Fast and Furious 9 trailer’s shown
Kicking off sometime after the events of The Fate of the Furious (aka Fast and Furious 8), the trailer opens on Dom (Vin Diesel) and Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) enjoying a seemingly simpler life with their son. And then a few moments later, turns out that, no, the old team is still going at it, from a secret underground base.
But, in the middle of a ‘routine’ op, Dom and the gang are attacked by a force led by Jacob (John Cena), Dom’s brother. And he’s teamed up with Cipher (Charlize Theron), the super-criminal from FF8. But she’s not the only character returning: Han (Sung Kang) is back, y’all. That orange Toyota Supra spotted on the FF9 set? That’s his.
Because this is a Fast and Furious trailer, there’s vehicles coming thick and fast. There’s Dodge Chargers a-plenty, as well as off-road racing SUVs, multiple motorcycles, what look like military G-Wagons, and even a rocket-powered Pontiac Fiero. And that’s just the start.
However, although we didn’t see it, could an electric Hummer be waiting in the wings for its on-screen debut?
Supporting evidence for Hummer EV appearance in Fast and Furious 9
With only one trailer, as well as a few promotional images, there’s little physical evidence for the Hummer EV showing up in Fast and Furious 9. But there are some interesting coincidences about it.
For one, Roadshow pointed out that FF9’s theater release, and the Hummer EV’s public debut, are on the same day: May 22, 2020. That would be an insane amount of exposure for GMC’s new electric truck.
Additionally, in his CES interview with USA Today, Ludacris said that the Fast and Furious franchise “continues to shake things up.” On the one hand, considering the rocket Fiero and car-grabbing fighter jet in the trailer, consider me shook. And Ludacris only mentioned electric motorcycles in the interview, nothing about electric trucks.
However, this interview took place before Hummer EV news leaked. And Ludacris did say that the movie was going to be “full of surprises.” And it’s not like this would be the first time a concept or pre-production car appeared in a high-profile Hollywood film.
Other pre-release vehicle appearances in movies
Perhaps the most famous example of a vehicle appearing in film before its public debut is the redesigned Chevy Camaro. As Variety and Popular Mechanics explained, Transformers director Michael Bay convinced GM to let him film the muscle car a full two years before it hit dealerships. The relationship, Automotive News reported, was so fruitful for both parties, that Chevrolet even designed a special concept just for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.
This is also a tactic Acura has used. Not only have Acura SUVs featured prominently in past Marvel films, Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) drove an NSX Spyder concept at the end of the first Avengers film. This is roughly 4 years before the production NSX supercar debuted; according to CardinaleWay Acura, underneath the sharp skin, the convertible was actually a 1992 NSX.
Meaning, even if the Hummer EV wasn’t fully ready at the time of filming, it could still show up in Fast and Furious 9.
