In April of last year, a now-infamous video of a $1 million Gemballa Mirage GT crashing into several cars in New York City went viral. As the modified Porsche continued to crash into other vehicles, police eventually caught up with the destroyed exotic. Given the overwhelming amount of video evidence, it seemed like a relatively simple case.

However, Road & Track now reports that the state of New York has dismissed all criminal charges against Benjamin Chen, the alleged driver. In total, the ultra-rare supercar crashed into five cars before coming to a stop. Thanks to Damarys7 on YouTube, we also get a close-up view of the damage.

How do you crash a $1 million Gemballa Mirage GT?

In case you haven’t seen this Gemballa Mirage GT crash repeatedly throughout New York City, we’ve embedded a compilation of videos above. According to Road & Track, this story began around 7:30 a.m. on April 7th, 2020. At this point, the ultra-rare supercar loses control and slams into the back of a parked Toyota Sienna, also hitting a Subaru Crosstrek in the process.

Instead of pulling over, the various videos show the Gemballa Mirage GT attempting to drive off. It is also worth noting that Road & Track reports that the driver was allegedly under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash. As you might imagine, slamming a custom-built supercar into the back of a minivan will cause some serious damage.

As the Gemballa Mirage GT tried to drive away, its collapsed front suspension made it very difficult to steer. The videos show the driver spinning out of control a few blocks away and crashing into other vehicles. The car itself was literally shedding major components as it attempted to flee.

The state claims the case can’t be proven beyond a reasonable doubt

Despite a multitude of videos showcasing this Gemballa Mirage GT hit and run and a subsequent arrest of its owner, Road & Track reports that the state of New York has dropped all criminal charges. The official statement reads:

“The People are moving to dismiss this matter because the case cannot be proven beyond a reasonable doubt,”

As Rob Ferretti points out in his latest YouTube video, this case didn’t even make it to a trial before getting dismissed. As a result, the case seemingly vanished despite an overwhelming amount of visual evidence of the events unfolding.

After learning this, it won’t surprise you to learn that this isn’t the first time this Gemballa Mirage GT owner has wrecked an exotic supercar.

While this Gemballa Mirage GT is certainly this owner’s most famous crash, it isn’t the only one. The Drive reports that this same driver also destroyed both a Lamborghini Murcielago SV and a McLaren 12C Spider throughout the years. As of writing, it is unclear if any charges exist for these other previous incidents. Regardless, this driver is likely already back on the road.
