The IIHS crash tested the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E and found that it scored high enough to earn a Top Safety Pick award. The Top Safety Pick award is given to vehicles which score a good or higher in all overlap crash testing, as well as side crash tests, roof strength and head restraint tests. 

However, not every Ford Mustang Mach-E was worthy of the award. It depends on the headlights of the trim level you buy. Good choices include the Premium Trim, GT Trim, and First Edition trims.

How are the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E crash test ratings?

The small overlap front: driver-side and passenger side tests measure how well a car traveling at 40 MPH does when the front left and right corners of the car collides with a five-foot tall rigid barrier. The Mustang Mach-E scored good in all of these categories, from overall to structure and safety cage to driver injury measures. 

The moderate overlap front test simulates an accident where a car traveling 40 MPH strikes a two-foot aluminum honeycomb barrier. Forty percent of the front of the car on the driver side hits this deformable barrier. The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E did well in all of the moderate overlap front tests. 

The Mustang Mach-E did well in side crash tests. Side test ratings are essential because there’s very little to absorb the shock of a car accident on the sides of a car. The IIHS uses small dummies representing small women or 12-year old children because they are more likely to be injured or killed in these types of accidents. Just like the front crash tests, the Mach-E scored a good in every category of the side crash tests. 

The Mach-E’s roof is strong and the restraints are good

The IIHS roof strength test is important because it keeps occupants from being crushed in a rollover and can also keep them from being ejected. The Mach-E scored good in this category. 

As far as head restraints, the 2021 Mustang Mach-E scored a good in its overall evaluation, dynamic rating, and seat/head restraint geometry. Good head restraints can help prevent neck injuries like whiplash and neck sprains. 

Is the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E crashworthy?
