What Does CrewMax Mean on a 2023 Toyota Tundra?
In 2023, trucks often offer a variety of configurations. In the case of the Toyota Tundra, this pickup is available in two cab options; the Double Cab (extended cab) or CrewMax (crew cab.) So, what exactly does CrewMax mean on Toyota’s full-size truck?
What does CrewMax mean for the Tundra?
Essentially, a Toyota Tundra CrewMax comes with increased room for rear passengers. That also means that there is more room for in-cab cargo storage if that is something that you need. The interior dimensions of a CrewMax Tundra are (front/rear, inches):
- Shoulder room: 65.0/62.4
- Legroom: 41.2/41.6
- Hip room: 52.5/60.5
- Headroom: 41.0/38.5
Because of the placement of the battery packs, Tundra models equipped with the i-FORCE MAX hybrid engine will have slightly less area in the rear. But that just impacts the headroom slightly.
Is the 2023 Toyota Tundra a good truck?
In terms of being a full-size truck, the 2023 Tundra does do a good job. But, it does have a high starting price and is not as capable as some of its rivals. Still, on the TNGA-F platform and with its coil-sprung rear suspension, I do find the Tundra to offer a comfortable ride.
When I did test the truck, it was the top-of-the-line Capstone trim, so some of that comfort might be from all of the leather and modern tech. But the redesigned Tundra is certainly more comfortable than the truck that it replaced.
The Tundra is the only full-size truck without a V8
When it comes to full-size trucks, a lot of folks prefer a pickup with a V8. V8 engines tend to offer more power and a naturally aspirated engine can often deliver serious longevity. Each new Tundra now comes with a twin-turbocharged V6 engine. In its hybrid form, it makes 437 horsepower and 583 pound-foot of torque.
The CrewMax cab configuration limits your bed choices to the 5.5-ft bed or the 6.5-ft bed. So that is something to take into consideration if you opt for the larger cab. The maximum bed length of the 2023 Tundra is 8.1 ft. But if you want that, you’ll have to go with the Double Cab.
How expensive is Toyota’s half-ton pickup?
In terms of cost, the 2023 Tundra starts at around $40k. That’s not as cheap as some other pickups out there, but you get perceived Toyota reliability. Also, things like a host of safety features are made standard. So to some folks, that premium might be worth it.
The top-of-the-line Tundra Capstone costs nearly double the entry-model amount. And it is only available as a CrewMax with the upgraded hybrid engine. I’m not sure how many folks will go for the Capstone, it honestly feels like a Lexus truck disguised as a Toyota.
The sweet spot of this Toyota Truck might be its SR5 trim. According to Car and Driver, you can get that with the TRD Off-Road package if you are interested in doing some adventure. But at the end of the day, the best truck is the one that works for you.
