The Subaru Solterra is an all-new electric crossover offering plenty of options. However, expert reviewers have avoided recommending a certain trim level. Though the Solterra has generated plenty of buzz, one trim is less appealing. Let’s examine the 2023 Subaru Solterra trims and explore which ones critics pick.

2023 Subaru Solterra trim comparison

The 2023 Subaru Solterra offers three trim levels, each with unique features and MSRP. Subaru starts the base trim, confusingly named the Premium, at $44,995. The mid-range Limited starts at $48,495, and the top-of-the-line Touring starts at $51,995. Despite the relatively small price difference among the trims, several notable differences could affect your decision when selecting the right Solterra.

The wheel design is one of the most noticeable distinctions among the three trims. The Premium trim comes with black-and-silver-finished full-wheel covers, while the Limited and Touring have 20-by-7.5-inch aluminum alloy wheels with a gray finish and silver finish spoke inserts.

Another difference is the LED fog lights, included only on the Limited and Touring.

All three trims are relatively similar in fuel efficiency. The Premium gets 94/114 MPGe highway/city, and the Limited and Touring achieve 93/111 MPGe.

And none will win any range awards. The Premium trim gets an EPA-estimated 228 miles on a full charge, while the Limited and Touring get 222 miles.

Moving to the interior, the Touring is the only trim that includes a panoramic glass roof with a power sunshade, providing a unique and luxurious touch. The Touring also comes with a panoramic view monitor and advanced parking assistance features, which are not available n the Premium.

Which 2023 Subaru Solterra trims do the experts recommend?

There is some discrepancy among automotive experts when choosing the best 2023 Subaru Solterra trim. While Edmunds recommends the Premium, Autotrader and Car and Driver prefer the Limited.

Car and Driver placed a green checkmark next to the Limited trim in its review as the “one to buy.” Still, its reviewers say they need more information on the pricing and available features before making a recommendation. However, Autotrader praises the Limited for its “upscale design and premium features,” including the 20-inch wheels, leather upholstery, and premium sound system.

On the other hand, Edmunds recommends the Premium base trim, citing the lack of performance or range differences among models. According to Edmunds, “You get a lot of standard features for the money, along with plenty of advanced safety features, including adaptive cruise control.”

It’s worth noting the Premium trim is also the most popular among consumers.

But none of the experts recommend the top-tier Touring trim, likely due to its higher price point and lack of additional range. The Touring starts at $51,995 — $7,000 more than the base model. However, the top trim offers no significant performance or range improvements, making it a less attractive option.

A comfortable and versatile electric crossover

The 2023 Subaru Solterra is a capable EV designed for comfortable rides on and off the pavement. With standard all-wheel drive, it provides a smooth and secure driving experience. In addition, the Solterra has numerous advanced driver’s aids, adding to its safety and convenience. And its light off-roading capabilities and spacious interior make it a solid option for adventuresome families.

However, because the Solterra is new, its reliability hasn’t been thoroughly evaluated. Indeed, Subaru recently issued a recall for loose hub bolts, meaning the wheels could fall off about 1,000 potentially affected Solterra EVs.

Overall, though, the 2023 Subaru Solterra is a practical electric crossover SUV offering plenty of features at a reasonable price.
