Critics aren’t being shy about how they feel. If given the chance, they wouldn’t own another Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe for 18 months again. Not many SUVs have provided so many headaches related to the powertrain.

Critics regret buying the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe

The team at Edmunds was excited to add a $64,150 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe to their long-term fleet. But the honeymoon period quickly wore off.

They accrued 24,000 miles on that Jeep, which is actually a lot. The average driver accrues about 15,000 miles per year. But during that time, the powertrain and ride quality were a constant source of complaints.

Multiple people became carsick and it hardly achieved its advertised range and fuel economy estimates. Plus, it left people stranded three times.

When the time came to end the Grand Cherokee 4xe into the sunset, it hurt financially. It was only worth $33,000, which is a depreciation rate of 48.5% in less than two years. The high mileage may have had an impact.

The first time the Jeep Grand Cherokee broke down, it was found completely dead. Then the electronics began rapidly flashing on and off. The 12-volt battery needed to be replaced and was covered under the warranty.

Then a few weeks later, disaster struck again. The Grand Cherokee 4xe suddenly became unresponsive and went into limp mode.

Tons of warning lights appeared on the dash. A pin became disconnected from the back of the electronic control unit and some wiring was damaged.

The third time the Grand Cherokee broke down, it went into limp mode again. It has a damaged parking assist module connector lock and the connector was loose.

But it’s possible that the team got a dud. Positives about the Grand Cherokee 4xe include its upscale interior, tons of cargo space, easy-to-use technology that allows streaming channels, the electric range, and its muscular engine.
