Say it isn’t so, microtransactions have entered the truck world with the new Toyota Tundra. Typically when you buy a truck, you get what you get. If it has remote start, heated seats, or apps, that’s great. But with the 2022 Toyota Tundra, you may have to pay a subscription fee for comfort and convenience features.

What requires a 2022 Toyota Tundra subscription?

The 2022 Toyota Tundra is loaded with new bells and whistles that you can’t access for free after buying the truck. For example, remote start, lock/unlock, automatic climate control features, and more come with a monthly fee.

To make matters worse, according to Pickup Truck Talk, the fees are confusing, and it may be difficult to figure out when you have to pay. You do get a few free trials for features like remote start, but once the trial periods run out, you lose access.

There are three subscription options for Remote Connect, Safety Connect, and Service Connect. The Remote and Safety Connect subscriptions cost $8 a month or $80 a year, and the Service Connect subscription currently can’t be renewed.

The Remote Connect and Safety Connect features have a one-year trial, while the Service Connect package has a three-year trial. So, if you notice that some of your favorite things stop working, maybe your trial ran out.

What comes with the Tundra subscriptions?

The 2022 Toyota Tundra is available with Toyota Connected Services. Basically, it places a ton of features in the Toyota app. It connects your vehicle with your smartphone and smartwatch and can do more than the key fob.

With Remote Connect, you can start your truck, lock and unlock the doors, get the air conditioning or heat going, see the location where you parked, monitor guest drivers, and access voice management with smart devices.

You can also see where the closest charging location is, check your battery charge level, and schedule when you want it to charge.

With Safety Connect, you can access the emergency assistance button for the ability to connect with a response center 24/7. You can request an immediate dispatch to your vehicle in the event of an emergency or need roadside assistance.

The response center will automatically be notified if your airbag deploys or if you’re rear-ended to dispatch emergency services. The stolen vehicle locator and collision assistance are also included.

Service Connect helps you stay on top of vehicle maintenance with your Toyota Tundra. It provides a vehicle health report, maintenance alerts, and maintenance reminders. The health status is available on your computer and phone.

Will more Tundra features become subscription based?

Currently, the 2022 Toyota Tundra subscriptions provide access to a few convenience features. Toyota is trying to provide a more digital experience for drivers and passengers, but we aren’t sure what’s in the works.

We hope that things such as heated seats, ventilated seats, a heated steering wheel, the head-up display, and more don’t become part of a subscription plan. Also, having to pay to warm up your truck or cool it off before you enter the cab stinks.

The Toyota Tundra subscription services currently have a low price, but things could change. Stay tuned for the latest Tundra updates.
