Many families flock to various automotive marques as if they’re tribal identities. On the trail it’s common to hear “We’re a Chevy square body family,” or at a vintage race weekend the refrain might be, “We’re Mustang people.” Seriously, some alien anthropologist might mistake Hemi Orange for a modern clan tartan.

One family seems to have gone against the grain. In a humorous Reddit post, user TheLastLugnut (bonus points for creativity), revealed his dad had a motive far beyond any brand loyalty: annoying his kid.

The post shows the hood of a gray Jeep Wrangler JK. From that angle, it’s not clear how modified the vehicle is. But its bumper has been swapped for a high-clearance off-roading one and fitted with a winch. In the background is an “Area 51 Blue” Ford Bronco Badlands. It is a four-door that appears to have the Sasquatch factory lift kit package.

The side-by-side photo of the off-road SUV nemeses would be enough to get the internet riled up on its own. But then there’s Lug Nut’s caption: “My retired father just brought home a new ride solely to spite my Wrangler. He’s still chuckling at his cleverness.”

Because the post was on the /r/Autos forum, the commenters piled on. There was plenty of: “I’d take the Bronco.” “Having owned a JK, Bronco all the way.” “Bronco is far superior to Wrangler. There I said it. Lol.” And of course, “I like your dad. ?”

There were some negative comments: “Cleverness would’ve been buying a Wrangler with the I6. Anything past that is overpriced crap.” And “They both are piles of garbage.” But in an opinionated world, that’s to be expected.

One user, however, had the sweetest response: “Y’all are gonna have some fun father-son off-road time.” And I have to agree, that’s what it’s all about. It looks like the OP has a 4WD they love and probably get off-road in often. It looks like Dad wanted to join in the fun. Going with the Ford was a way to poke some fun at the Wrangler lover. But in the end, it opens up the opportunity to hit the trails together. And what’s not to love about quality family time? Those sorts of traditions are what families are actually talking about when they gush about the makes and models they all love together.

These two SUV fans might even have some company. The above comment about quality off-road time continued, “I’m jealous, is he adopting?” Lug Nut responded, “Hahaha. I’ll ask.” But to round out the trifecta, the adoptee obviously needs to show up in a Hummer.
